Interesting & entertaining

This is a follow-up to the previous short story Woo'd in Haste and if you haven't read that one, I suggest you do it before you start this one. The reason for it is because this one not just picks up where the other left off, but it overlaps too, so in essence this is the continuation of the same story. Which begs the question, why wasn't this one book? Instead we have two short stories [this one is even shorter than the first, at 140 or so pages].

In any case, I thought this one as well as the first, was a sweet and entertaining story with two main characters a bit more complex than the first couple. Plot wise, I liked this one better because of its deeper meaning and interesting resolution.

If you're short on reading time, both of these stories will entertain you.

Book Description Sounded Interesting BUT!!!!

I thought I would enjoy this book because of the unusual description given. So many immature characters and especially the H & H. Characters were created with so much misunderstanding and doubt. Their personalities were hard to grasp and their connection was so off the mark. It seems that all the characters go around in circles trying to figure out each other. A disappointing read for me.

He is Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke University Divinity School and retired�Bishop of the North Alabama Conference of The United Methodist Church, after serving for 20 years as faculty member and Dean of the Chapel at Duke University. He lives in Durham, North Carolina.

Will Willimon has published many books, including his preaching subscription service on MinistryMatters.com, Pulpit Resource, and Fear of the Other: No Fear in Love, both published by Abingdon Press.

A passionate and helpful explanation of traditional Wesleyanism

I'm currently deciding whether I will join a United Methodist Church. I've read this book and another on Methodist doctrine (called, fittingly, Methodist Doctrine) and I've come away from both with the sense that the foundational truths officially embraced by Methodism are orthodox, biblical, and inspirational in practically all aspects. Any peculiarity is typically rooted in a distinctively Wesleyan Arminianism that is (as with most schools of theology) certainly arguable but not heretical. One wants to cheer and shout, "Sign me up!"

But the current distance between original beliefs and modern ones in the UMC confuses me. I read John Wesley and the UMC website and see a significant disconnect in many areas, particularly evangelism. It's why I went searching for these books to begin with. And neither of them really addresses that dissonance. In fact, the other book ignores it altogether.

Willimon, bishop of the North Alabama Conference of the UMC, doesn't use this positive text on unifying ideas as a forum for criticism. He does, however, get in one comment on the relativism prevalent in the mainline churches in his first chapter. Speaking of a too-broad interpretation of John Wesley's warnings against theological hairsplitting, he writes:

"At our worst, this generous Wesleyan 'think and let think' has led to our acting as if ideas about God are not important after all and to the sad error of thinking ... who cares what anybody believes as long as that belief is sincerely held? Wesley was a fierce foe of this sort of goofy theological 'indifferentism'. So is the Bible."

This confessional, historical and personally challenging primer on Methodist theology refutes the stereotype of mainline belief as being crippled by political correctness and "niceness" to the point of accepting anything and nothing all at once. Willimon doesn't seem to.

If I have any misgivings about the book they are these:

It's a virtual paean to Wesley, praising and appealing to him at every turn. But it scarcely appeals to the Bible. I know some mainline readers are wary of scripture quotations and dismiss them as "prooftexting" but the Bible is still, officially, the primary authority for Methodist belief and it would have been nice to have scriptural back-up in many instances. I think I can safely say Wesley would agree.

Speaking of the Bible, this book is peppered with notes that require a copy of The Wesley Study Bible (co-edited by Willimon) to read them.

Sloppy conversion mars Kindle version

Based on the content of this book, I'd easily give it 4+ stars, as its valuable for all Methodists, no matter how long one has been a part of the Church.

However, numerous reproduction errors really distract from the content, and thats why I've given it 2 stars. The first 2 chapters have phrases repeating after every paragraph, and in later chapters the lack of spacing makes accurate highlighting difficult. Heck, even the popular highlights shown on the description page show this - Wesleyans believe that in Jesus Christ, God gets personal, relational, available, and virtually unavoidable.Ruin'd. Notice no spacing between the period and Ruin'd. Much of the book is like this.

This book is the second Kindle book published by Abingdon that I've bought and the second one that was loaded with errors. The first book I returned. This one I kept because I believe that, despite the distractions, its worth the money; however, I probably won't buy any more books until Im sure they are reproduced correctly for Kindle.

Great Articulation of the Faith from a Wesleyan Perspective

I've always appreciated Willimon's insights into life in Christ and now he has provided us with a great resource for delving into our theology as Wesleyans. There other great resources out there, some more academic than this, but none as useful and practical in my opinion. I love how he uses Wesley's sermons, notes from the recently published Wesley Study Bible, and the United Methodist Hymnal (which is far superior to my own denomination's hymnal). As one reads This We Believe one can experience the wholistic approach of Wesleyan theology.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about theology from a Wesleyan perspective. I will be using this book in my own classes and small groups.

Stunning

If anyone were to try and describe this book as a bore, I couldn't conceive any reason why. This book held me completely spellbound. The book starts off with Joe experiencing these unusual chain of events on the one year anniversary of his wife and childrens plane crash. As the days progresses he comes into contact with families who had also lost their loved ones on this devestating flight, but as soon as he does come into contact with them, they begin to parish themselves due to unexplainable suicide and deaths. So what secrets does this "Sole Survivor" have? And will Joe feel these answers justify his loss? I know this book kept me captivated right down to the last page, and Joe's last decision.

I recently picked up this book for four reasons:

1. It was on sale

2. I'd just finished reading "The Husband"

3. I needed light entertainment for a long flight

4. I was in a hurry and it was conveniently stacked near to the register

It was only during the boarding process that I glanced at the back cover, and discovered my faux pas, which did not escape the notice of a literate cabin attendant who gave me "the look".

Okay, maybe a novel about a plane crash is not ideal for a five hour flight, but I'm not superstitious that way (knock wood). Unfortunately, this is a typical Dean Koontz book - it starts off smoothly, gains momentum, takes off and gets moving at high speed, and just when you're enjoying the flight, it suddenly goes crazily off course, crashes and burns.

A crime reporter loses his wife and two daughters in a bizarre plane crash that kills everybody on board. A year later he's still in depression, but then he meets a woman who apparently survived the crash. He starts tracking her down, and relatives of the other victims suddenly start committing suicide under very strange circumstances. When he eventually finds her, things get even weirder, and we're back to secret labs, mad scientists and illegal experiments, mixed with cults, conspiracies and magic pictures.

Enjoy the ride while it lasts, but beware of the sudden stop.

Sensory chocolate...If I were blind, I'd want Koontz to be my eyes

I relished this book the way one would relish a good chocolate bar...reading and letting it soak into my soul. This is one of the few books I've read that actually draws you into the scenery. You don't know if it's the reality of the characters or Koontz's talented, yet subtle description of places and situations. When he's sitting on the beach, you can feel almost hear the waves and smell the sea salt. When he's on the run from dangerous people, you almost feel like you're there in the passenger seat beside him.

I finished this book, put it down and just said, "Wow..."

Is there life after death? That's the question this book tackles...and while the journey to this answer is spell-binding, I think we, the readers, wanted more elaboration into this question. If only Koontz knew all the answers!

I'm surprised at the negative reviews, but I can see why some wouldn't like this. Unfortunately, many Koontz readers aren't true lovers of his literary genius. Koontz books are usually prominently displayed in the grocery store's best-seller section...a convenient buy for readers not looking for a read from someone with enormous talent, but rather something that will entertain with a good plot but no supporting filler or depth.

If you're not a serious reader, but a poolside one, this might not be the book for you. The glory of Koontz's writing is in the details and the ending isn't written for the poolside crowd that want to see the impossible happen. There's no swell of trumpets and bringing back of the dead. The ending is tremendously satisfying, but I wish it was elaborated on with as much detail as the rest of the story.

To really "get" Koontz's writing, you have to have an open mind and leave aside skeptical opinions, as much of what he writes seems to be horror, sci-fi, supernatural, or suspense. You have to fully allow yourself to leave your own world or you will never be able to enjoy the tale as presented.

Nobody can deny that Koontz is a spectacular writer. I haven't read every single one of Koontz's novels and I'm glad I haven't. I think it dims your appreciation for a good novel when you read it because you spend all your time comparing it to every other work ever written by Koontz. When it comes to a good author, this can be like comparing your own children. If you have never read Koontz, definitely buy this book. If you have, try to clear your mind of who the author is and "open your heart" to this wonderful story.

JOHN S. TOWNSEND, Susan and Bruce Worster Professor of Physics at Harvey Mudd College, the science and engineering college of the Claremont Colleges, USA. He received his BS from Duke University, his PhD from Johns Hopkins University, USA, and was a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow. He has been a visiting professor at Caltech, the University of Southampton in England, Duke University and Swarthmore College, and he was a Science Fellow at the Center for International Security and Arms Control at Stanford University, USA. Townsend is also the author of Quantum Physics: A Fundamental Approach to Modern Physics.

This textbook is excellent! It should be used at absolutely every university for entry to intermediate level courses on quantum mechanics. It is well written, has an excellent examples and problem sets. Everyone is talking how quantum mechanics are 'weird', 'strange' and 'impossible to comprehend', but it is obviously a lie. With proper (modern) approach everyone can understand and apply QM principles with ease. This textbook is amazing in providing support for modern QM course.

As a graduate student preparing for a PhD entrance exam, this is the most helpful quantum mechanics book I have found. Spending 1 week reading this covered more bra-ket notation and perturbation theory than 3 semesters of undergraduate quantum at 2 different schools. Great for self teaching and wish my course had used this book instead of Griffith.

Wow, I can’t explain how much of this information I could have used when I started. I've been helping my grandparents with online marketing for their restaurant. They've had a facebook for quite some time but needed to expand social media presence. This book has definetly helped. Profits haven't doubled but there has been a visible increase. If you want to learn how to interact with your customers on social media better, this is a good read.
