About the Author
No writer is more quintessentially American than John Steinbeck. Born in 1902 in Salinas, California, Steinbeck attended Stanford University before working at a series of mostly blue-collar jobs and embarking on his literary career. Profoundly committed to social progress, he used his writing to raise issues of labor exploitation and the plight of the common man, penning some of the greatest American novels of the twentieth century and winning such prestigious awards as the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. He received the Nobel Prize in 1962, "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception." Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures.

Still true today - unfortunately
By Bethanie Frank
I picked up this book at a sale and was intrigued by it right away. It was written in 1966 and the photos are so interesting to look at. But, the best part - every single one of his essays in the book is still relevant today. Which is not a good thing. It really made me stop and think about how far we haven't come as a nation - even though we think we're leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else. We are a selfish group of people, we contradict most of what we say and do, and we are blind (or look the other way) to many of our actions.
I really was appalled by the truth in which he spoke. I have a new found respect for Mr. John Steinbeck - not only as a writer, but as a politically aware individual.

an unusual and excellent steinbeck resource
By Larry Darnell
this is an interesting and unusual compilation of Steinbeck's periodical writings, otherwise not readily available, which I found to be very insightful regarding the Salinas community's odd dislike of Steinbeck. While the Grapes of Wrath were hardly boosterism for California growers and law enforcement, some of these articles are almost rabid in their intensity and even more poignant in their journalism. This is a really useful resource for anyone interested in getting a wider sense of Steinbeck's thinking and development.

In Search of Cell History: The Evolution of Life's Building Blocks, by Franklin M. Harold

The origin of cells remains one of the most fundamental problems in biology, one that over the past two decades has spawned a large body of research and debate. With In Search of Cell History, Franklin M. Harold offers a comprehensive, impartial take on that research and the controversies that keep the field in turmoil.

Written in accessible language and complemented by a glossary for easy reference, this book investigates the full scope of cellular history. Assuming only a basic knowledge of cell biology, Harold examines such pivotal subjects as the relationship between cells and genes; the central role of bioenergetics in the origin of life; the status of the universal tree of life with its three stems and viral outliers; and the controversies surrounding the last universal common ancestor. He also delves deeply into the evolution of cellular organization, the origin of complex cells, and the incorporation of symbiotic organelles, and considers the fossil evidence for the earliest life on earth. In Search of Cell History shows us just how far we have come in understanding cell evolution—and the evolution of life in general—and how far we still have to go.

Review
“A must-have. . . . In Search of Cell History is a wise and useful summary of the issues facing origins research. Importantly, it refocuses the origin problem onto the cell in toto, as a unit of living matter; it represents a solid foundation for origins research where chemists have begun only very recently to make significant advances in understand the crowding and structuring of biomacromolecules in living cells. There is no need to throw in the towel yet.” (Jan Spitzer, Mallard Creek Polymers, Inc. Microbe)

“Harold manages to cover a lot of ground, offers a piece of writing that is highly instructive and broad in its treatment of cellular evolution, and includes a helpful glossary at the end. He also provides a wonderful historical summary and perspective. . . . We can thank Harold for his fine work, so broad and sweeping, on leading us to nature’s ultimate mystery—the link of the LUCA to the cosmos.” (Paul Schimmel, Scripps Research Institute FASEB Journal)

“Wonderful. . . . A loving distillation of connections within the incredible diversity of life in the biosphere, framing one of biology’s most important remaining questions: how did life begin? . . . Using [a] deceptively casual approach, Harold cleans up the vast untidy mess of biology and stacks the fundamental concepts in an orderly and creative way for readers to enjoy. . . . Harold’s book is like a balloon that will let [young scientists] rise above the trees for a while and look down to better understand the scope and shape of the forest—and perhaps then descend to pluck some low-hanging fruit. Senior scientists like myself will take pleasure in comparing perspectives with Harold’s. This is, after all, a story to conjure with—that of how life began and evolved into eukaryotic cells, a hundred trillion of which compose the human body. No one can yet tell this story in its entirety, but Harold’s book is a good place to start.” (David Deamer, University of California, Santa Cruz Nature)

“The big questions in evolution are the ones that grab our imagination: How did life begin? Where do cells come from? How did eukaryotes come to be? How does life become organized? How does it become complex, and what is biological complexity in the first place? How does energy figure into cell evolution? Where did the genetic code come from? Those are the kinds of questions that Franklin Harold, a grand master of cellular workings and bioenergetics, has packed into his latest book. . . . Sound interesting? It is. The book is a must for those interested in microbial evolution, life’s origin, or both. . . . Coming into the final chapter, the reader gets a strong sense that judgment day and the unabated Wrath of God are lurking just around the corner, to be delivered ablaze with lightning bolts from above. There is chilling suspense that Harold is finally going to part the waters and thunder forth what he really thinks about all these ideas on early evolution, namely that individually and in sum they cut neither ice nor mustard, and that we are best advised to repentantly seek our drawing board, eraser firm in hand, with renewed resolve to do better in our next sixty years of attempt. I will not divulge here how much hellfire and damnation the final verdicts hold.” (William F. Martin, University of Dsseldorf, Germany BioEssays)

“Within In Seach of Cell History Harold deftly discusses the definition of life, successes and problems of classification of cells, how cells get and use energy, the great divergence of cell types into three loose families, cell symbionts, and even tackles the ultimate riddle of where cells first came from. His approach is a classic scientific one, starting with what is known and provable then moving into theories of what is not known. He is clear to separate fact from speculation, not hesitating to state his own opinions as such and contrasting them point by point with others in the field. It is very refreshing to read about the forward edge of cell research without polemics of any kind. The talent of his writing is twofold, first; I felt a part of a conversation among the leading lights of cell research, and second; Harold has no problem stating what is not known. . . . This is a book that illustrates what scientific writing should be; precise, exciting, and presenting the unknown in such a way as to inspire us to want to learn more.” (San Francisco Book Review)

“A fine addition to the many books on how cells originated and evolved. It is well written, accessible, thorough, and illustrated with helpful figures, focusing on cellular organization and how that organization diversified as various life-forms evolved.Harold comprehensively discusses the important process of fusion between cells (symbiosis) in cell evolution as well as information on cellular structure and organization that can be gleaned from the fossil record. . . . Highly recommended.” (B. K. Hall, Dalhousie University Choice)

“In Search of Cell History offers an ambitious, one-stop overview of early cell evolution that covers all major theories related to the origin of life, the early evolution and diversification of cells, and the emergence of eukaryotic cells with their structural novelties, such as nuclei, mitochondria, and plastids. . . . The bottom line: I really admire this book and expect to refer to it frequently in the future. . . . Harold does a marvelous job of reviewing and summarizing an unwieldy mass of literature on the origin and early diversification of life and providing some opinions about which theories and lines of research seem promising.” (David Baum, University of Wisconsin-Madison Reports of the National Center for Science Education)

“This book is a rare pleasure: a beautiful, rational, wise, and eloquent framing of life’s greatest mysteries, what remains to be known, and how we might get there. It should be read by anyone who wonders, seriously, how we came to be. If it does not provide all the answers, that is because we honestly do not know.” (Nick Lane University College London and author of "Life Ascending: The Ten Great Inventions of Evolution")

“When dealing with difficult questions such as the origin of life, one yearns for writing that is both sagacious and readable, two qualities that don’t always go together. Fortunately, we can forego the need for making a choice. Harold’s book provides an account that is both masterful in the pursuit of the very question and in the clarity with which he unravels relevant phenomena. I daresay that few more helpful guides to a complex terrain have come forth since Dante’s Beatrice.” (Moselio Schaechter, Distinguished Professor, emeritus Tufts University)

“The origin of life is one of the great enigmas yet to yield to modern science. While there are other books that attempt to place their own spin on how life came about, In Search of Cell History stands alone in that it is written not by one of those advocating a particular viewpoint but instead by one who tries to remain a detached, albeit extremely well informed, observer of events. An excellent piece of scholarly work by a suitably unbiased and appropriately skeptical researcher.” (Mark A. Farmer University of Georgia)

something to be thankful for
By j a haverstick
This book arrived the day before Thanksgiving. I had recently read THE AMOEBA IN THE ROOM and was looking to expand my knowledge. Thumbing thru CELL HISTORY I thought I had possibly made a mistake as the sentences I lighted on seemed pretty technical. Next day, however, Thanksgiving, I woke up, lit a fire, cut my finger to the bone paring vegtables with a steak knife, wrapped it up, started the food and sat down with this volume. I saw at once it was a well organized book consisting of twelve self contained chapters of about twenty pages each. So just take it one by one, I told myself. A few hours later, by the time the family drifted in, I was onto chapter four ar five and could hardly put it down.

Harold has a very clear and organized writing technique. Additionally there is an extremely helpful glossary at the back where you can look up tiose familiar words of which you can never remember the meaning, protease, plasmid, gram positive and so on. There are several illustrations and line drawings in each chapter which are most clear and helpful. The book is engaging and takes attention but it is not difficult. I imagine Harold was a very good teacher by the presentation of this book. It deals with the evolutionary history of one celled organisms which turns out to be fascinating. It considers the vexing question of whether the unit of selection is the cell or the DNA. It trys to find a place in the picture for viruses. It fills you in on the significance of lateral gene transferal. By the time you've finished, you've got not only an up-to-date picture (much of this material came to light in only the last decades) of the possible lineages and progenitor of the protists you also have a very clear picture of cell biology in general.
The last two chapters are the most intellectually provoking. Sometimes it seems he's into the mystic, so be careful not to overreact. He's just honestly puzzled. The origens of protists and the origin of life itself are much more murky than I had supposed. It's not like like we just have a few more lines in the crossword to fill in! Harold is very clear on the ignorance we are in, in these areas there has not been much progress. The end of the book is as much philosopihical almost as biological and it was fascinating. Sadly, given the latest hype about the Mars explorer, I probabaly wont be around for any discoveries of extraterrestial organisms; for given what Harold says, I think that's perhaps the most promising way to get a theory (i.e., a larger sample).
The only part which is stuill unclear to me is the energy gernerating chemistry of these organisms. Since Harold has written an introductory book on this topic as well, I think I'm hooked into ordering that one, too. The only downside was the sliced finger and a spilled glass of beer has reduced the resale value, but this is a book I'd never want to get rid of. Most informative reading experience in months. Really food for thought.

Buy this book for the most up to date review of life origin research, and buy it from University of Chicago for print quality
By JayEm
By far the best book I've read for an overview of the current state of research into life's origin on Earth. The author's treatment of the "tree of life" addresses cellular membrane and well as genetic information inheritance, and the difficulties that arise when fitting three-dimensional cell structure into the world of genetic descent with modification. For that alone I thank him for writing the book. The author reviews the history and current status of lateral gene transfer, the origin of the Archaea, the role of symbiosis in the origin of Eukaryota, the evolution of bio-energetics, and the evidence for, and contributions from, a RNA world and the virus world. Well written, lots of new info, and well recommended. You will be pleased.

Don't order the book from Amazon.com. Order it directly from University of Chicago Press. Amazon sent me a print-on-demand copy of this new book, probably made from the eBook/Kindle scan of the original. The copy of Amazon did not look right at all - the illustrations could not be read, low contrast, distinct bands and segmented gray scale in most of the illustrations. Text looked pale on some pages. I contacted University of Chicago Press and told them about the quality of the book as received from Amazon (printed in Kentucky, I think) and they sent me a new copy from their printer. Night and day! Their copy had wonderfully printed grey-scale illustrations that preserved the subtle changes, no "banding" or low contrast. I returned the POD copy to Amazon.

A masterful synthesis, even if too pessimistic about unraveling the origin of cellular organization
By Roy A. Black
Frank Harold’s “In Search of Cell History” is a masterful synthesis of what we know about the origin and evolution of cells, up to the appearance of eukaryotes about 1.5 billion years ago. There is extensive discussion of the likely attributes of the “last universal common ancestor” of all life on earth today, and of how it diverged to the three domains—bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes. Harold also addresses more specific issues, such as the origin of the energy system used by all cells and the mechanism by which complex components within cells arose. He reserves discussion of the origin of cells for a late chapter; he considers this question to be the “ultimate riddle” and is skeptical that we will ever solve it.

Each topic is carefully introduced, and the prose is clear and lively throughout. Indeed, the book reads as if the author is sitting in a room with you, captivated by the phenomena he describes and eager to tell the story. So it should be accessible to anyone with a basic knowledge of biology. The analysis is nonetheless highly sophisticated, and the book is exceptional in its coverage of competing views and in providing an objective delineation of what's known from what isn't.

The last chapter turns more philosophical, as other reviewers have noted, but I thought this was fine—after telling such a grand story, why not let loose with some speculation as to what if anything it all means? Is life a manifestation of some kind of universal drive toward complexity? I think most of the book actually stands in opposition to this conclusion, but as always Harold’s argument is highly intelligent and articulate.

I will echo a “quibble” noted by David Deamer in his positive review of the book for Nature: I think Harold is excessively pessimistic in his assessment of our prospects for understanding the origin of cells. I agree whole-heartedly that the core of the problem is explaining how cellular organization arose. Pointing to a possible energy source here, a candidate surface for RNA polymerization there, etc. doesn’t address the core problem, and origin-of-life researchers would do well to read Harold’s critique of the field. But as he himself relates, prebiotic molecules called fatty acids actually self-assemble spontaneously into cell-like membrane structures. Moreover, a recent paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (disclosure: I am an author) shows that the building blocks of RNA spontaneously associate with such membranes. These simple physical phenomena would seem to offer a plausible explanation for the origin of biological order, and hence remove the issue from the realm of mystery.

But I nonetheless highly recommend reading Harold’s incisive and provocative treatment of this question, as well as the rest of the book.

The Internet of Us: Knowing More and Understanding Less in the Age of Big Data, by Michael P. Lynch

With far-reaching implications, this urgent treatise promises to revolutionize our understanding of what it means to be human in the digital age.

We used to say "seeing is believing"; now googling is believing. With 24/7 access to nearly all of the world's information at our fingertips, we no longer trek to the library or the encyclopedia shelf in search of answers. We just open our browsers, type in a few keywords and wait for the information to come to us. Indeed, the Internet has revolutionized the way we learn and know, as well as how we interact with each other. And yet this explosion of technological innovation has also produced a curious paradox: even as we know more, we seem to understand less.

While a wealth of literature has been devoted to life with the Internet, the deep philosophical implications of this seismic shift have not been properly explored until now. Demonstrating that knowledge based on reason plays an essential role in society and that there is much more to “knowing” than just acquiring information, leading philosopher Michael Patrick Lynch shows how our digital way of life makes us overvalue some ways of processing information over others, and thus risks distorting what it means to be human.

With far-reaching implications, Lynch's argument charts a path from Plato's cave to Shannon's mathematical theory of information to Google Glass, illustrating that technology itself isn't the problem, nor is it the solution. Instead, it will be the way in which we adapt our minds to these new tools that will ultimately decide whether or not the "Internet of Things"―all those gadgets on our wrists, in our pockets and on our laps―will be a net gain for humanity. Along the way, Lynch uses a philosopher's lens to examine some of the most urgent issues facing digital life today, including how social media is revolutionizing the way we think about privacy; why a greater reliance on Wikipedia and Google doesn't necessarily make knowledge "more democratic"; and the perils of using "big data" alone to predict cultural trends.

Promising to modernize our understanding of what it means to be human in the digital age, The Internet of Us builds on previous works by Nicholas Carr, James Gleick and Jaron Lanier to give us a necessary guide on how to navigate the philosophical quagmire that is the Information Age.

Review
“A bracing challenge to Internet enthusiasts.” (Booklist)

“Lynch’s basic argument is that if we understand better the conditions under which knowledge is produced and disseminated―conditions he explores clearly and cogently―then we will become more ‘responsible' knowers.” (Wall Street Journal)

“[A] fascinating new book…Lynch has been writing about this topic for a long time, and passionately.” (Jill Lepore - The New Yorker)

“[Lynch] pursues his argument with commendable seriousness, clarity, and attunement to historical context….He has written an intelligent book that struggles honestly with important questions: Is the net turning us into passive knowers? Is it degrading our ability to reason? What can we do about this?” (David Weinberger - LA Review of Books)

“Lynch effectively presents the case for rationality against factional loyalties and insists that there should be vigorous promotion of scientific methods and thinking in public discourse. . . . An excellent, much-needed contribution to the constant battle to sort truth from falsity.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

Skims the surface
By Amazon Customer
This book was interesting and sparked many deeper thoughts and understandings, but it was written with a more general audience in mind. So, there are a lot of instances where the author skims the surface of a major point or idea. It seems like he wants to dive deeper, but hesitates instead. Good discussion about what big data tells us versus how that is interpreted or is understood. I would recommend it for a general and heavily philosophical discussion of big data, but that's as far as I'd go.

Fascinating and frightening. This wouldn't be a summer beach read for most people. A bit of a slow read, due to technical terms and definitions, but the author makes it about as easy as he possibly can. Highly recommended.

Escape From China: The Long Journey From Tiananmen to Freedom, by Zhang Boli

Who can forget the searing images, telecast around the world, of the brave Chinese students facing the tanks that rolled toward them in Tiananmen Square as they rebelled against their Communist government? After a two-week standoff, the military forces charged in and brutally suppressed the revolt, killing many students and issuing a warrant for the arrest of all responsible for the insurgence. As one of the top student leaders in the demonstrations at Tiananmen Square, Zhang Boli became even more famous as he managed to evade a ruthless nationwide police manhunt. After two years as a fugitive, he was the only leader who had not been accounted for. Among the twenty-one students placed on the government's most-wanted list, Zhang knew that he would never again be able to live openly in China and that he must bid his beloved country -- as well as his wife and baby daughter -- farewell. In "Escape From China," Zhang Boli tells the fascinating, inspirational story of how he avoided capture and surpassed overwhelming obstacles in his struggle to survive and ultimately find freedom in the West. Traveling across the frozen terrain of the former Soviet Union, where Russian peasants rescued him, and finding his way through the deserted lands of China's precarious borders, Zhang had little but his extraordinary will to propel him, subsisting for months at a time on the flesh of wild animals. In the course of his long ordeal, he loses his love, finding God and, eventually, freedom. Although Zhang's incredible journey was filled with many harrowing experiences, he chooses, in this gripping first-person account, to focus on the many kind people who helped him through his darkestdays. A powerful memoir of great drama and historical resonance, "Escape From China" will not only astound you, but renew your faith in humanity and in the power of the human spirit.

Amazon.com Review
When the 1989 Tiananmen Square demonstrations became a bloody massacre, Zhang Boli, a prominent student leader, was placed on China's most wanted list. Of the 21 listed, he is the only one to elude authorities. Escape from China is Zhang's first-person account of his perilous two-year flight from his pursuers, a flight that eventually brought him to America. Fleeing from a regime that had "lost rationality and humanity", he went north--crossing into Russia for a while--relying not only on the kindness of friends, relatives, and strangers, but also on his own ingenuity. He spent months living rough in the harsh, wild, Russian-Chinese border region east of Mongolia. Zhang's narrative is blunt, precise, and commendably modest. Especially compelling are the conversations he had during his odyssey. Much of their power derives from Zhang's rendering--unblinking, no matter how gruff and vulgar. Escape from China is at once an indictment of authoritarianism and a gripping story of hardship, bravery, and determination. --H. O'Billovich

From Publishers Weekly
One of the prominent student leaders of the democracy movement so brutally crushed in Tiananmen Square 13 years ago, Zhang spent a harrowing two years as a fugitive in rural northeastern China before finding asylum in the U.S. and eventually becoming a Christian priest (and prominent speaker) in Los Angeles. Zhang's searing memoir incisive, fast-paced and full of textured details begins with the collective experience of the democracy movement. He recalls the cultural and political atmosphere at Beijing University during the spring of 1989; the circle of ebullient Chinese intellectuals passionate about social reforms; the hunger strikes; the negotiations; and finally the bloody terror of the crackdown. Turning to his two-year-long attempt to evade the Chinese authorities, Zhang presents his exploits modestly, but one is awed at every turn by his steely nerve and street savvy, and by the compassion that he liberally accords humans, animals and the land that gave him shelter. Most moving, however, are the portraits of the ordinary people of northeastern China among whom he hid. These peasants, laborers and fishermen, with whom the incognito Zhang shared the arduous fight for subsistence, were often illiterate and far removed from Tiananmen physically and culturally, yet they understood Zhang's personal plight and its significance for the country. Through these sketches, Zhang memorably shows the real people who make the fight for democracy in China worthwhile. 8 pages of b&w photos.

From Library Journal
Although many students and intellectuals in China will say that the Democracy Movement and the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989 are well behind them, Zhang's well-told story of his participation in these events as a student organizer and his harrowing escape to the West will be welcomed by many readers. The refugee memoir is by now an established genre, presenting a personal and bottom-up view of China's tumultuous modern history for Western audiences. This story adds to the literature in telling how Zhang survived as a fugitive in China, making a living as a country fisherman, fleeing across the frozen landscapes of inner Asia, relying on old and new friends, adopting Christianity, and eventually being smuggled out to Hong Kong. Along the way, we are introduced to his family and to the many colorful people who helped him survive. Zhang is now a pastor at a Chinese American church in California. Better translation than original
By Sung
Just a simple response to Mrs. G's review. Firstly, I wanted to ask Mrs. G, Could you read Chinese to decide whether the English version is good or bad? I found the translation a lot better than the original Chinese version. That is, the original Chinese is even more vulgar in many contexts, and I appreciated the translator's job, with some British taste indeed. A translator can only do so much to improve on a text that was not brilliantly written to begin with. If the translator's English is not refined enough, then it should be the editor's job to edit and revise it. Since you think the English version is exciting, what flaws is there that made you blame the translator? Indeed, I am glad that the translator has beautifully REwritten some content in a way that is acceptable to the American readers, and that shows that the translator is actually a good English writer and also well learned in Chinese studies. Maybe it does not occur to Mrs. G that even a pastor can be biased. It's regrettable if Mr. Zhang, who has apparently converted many Chinese, still cannot acknowledge the translator's efforts and achievement.

A Gripping Story of Bravery and Determination Beyond Belief
By Purpose Driven
First, a short response to the review "telling truth or not" by "a reader". Shortly after the June 4th massacre the Chinese government broadcasted on television a video (apparently taken by the secret police) mockingly claiming that "while the 'poor worms' were on hunger strike, the leading 'turmoil elements' were eating in local restaurants using the donations intended for the movement." Almost immediately after the broadcast a university student in Hong Kong (a student of Chinese Universtiy of HK, if I remember correctly), whose face also appeared on the video, came out and clarifed that the dinner took place AFTER the hunger struck (the hunger strike ended at 10:00p.m. May 16). He was a representative of the universtiy students from HK, and he invited the leaders for dinner and he paid the bill -- no money was used from donations. When the video was replayed in slow motion, one could see what they were eating and would appreciate that it was indeed a very, very simple meal.

One may find that the way the officers conduct their business and the way the commoners response are somewhat beyond believe. I know that the author is genuinely telling the truth, for I was detained in China twice, once for a month and once for 3 days.

I have read the original Chinese version of the book and also some background material about the author. Within three months after he arrived at US he was diagnosed to have final stage liver cancer. The auther immediately started writing his memoir in the hospital bed hoping that he would leave something valuable for his daughter Little Snow. Miraculously his cancer was gone when he finished writing his book!

The brand new thriller featuring Investigative Analyst Fredrika Bergman and Alex Recht of the Stockholm police. Shortly after a crowded New York-bound flight takes off from Stockholm, a bomb threat is found on board. Anonymous hijackers demand that the Swedish government revoke its decision to deport a Moroccan man. If their demands are not met, the plane will explode if it attempts to land. The US and Swedish governments must choose between negotiating with terrorists in order to save the four hundred passengers held hostage at thirty thousand feet, or to stand their ground and pursue the deportation of a possibly innocent man. Fredrika Bergman returns to the police force to act as a liaison between Police Superintendent Alex Recht, and the abrasive Eden Lundell, agent with the Security Service's counter-terrorism unit. But they soon realize that the plot behind the hijacking is far more complex than anyone initially thought. As the hours pass, the team are running out of options, and the plane is running out of fuel...

Excellent Thriller - Can be read as a standalone.
By Liz Barnsley
A really excellent thriller this one – I am aware now that there are previous novels in this series featuring Fredrika Bergman and Alex Recht but sadly these had passed me by – however in this case I have started “late” at the right point, this novel being a slight change in direction from the previous – and introducing (I believe) Eden Lundell, a character I fell in love with. I will certainly go back and read the others, however for the next reader, starting here will give you no problems whatsoever.

A series of bomb threats brings Alex Recht into contact with Sapo, the Swedish intelligence service and also back together with previous partner Fredricka Bergman – when the threats pass with no actual explosions, everyone is relieved if somewhat confused – however the real danger has just taken off from Stockholm and is en route to New York…

This is a novel of many twists and turns and some absolutely edge of the seat moments throughout…Alex has a particular reason for being determined to bring the plane down safely, but he is embroiled in political motivations and secrecy involving many agencies across a divide of many countries, so he has his work cut out for him. It is all very exciting, eminently readable and one of those page turners that keeps you burning the midnight oil…

I particularly liked the intricate plotting, the depth of the characters and the seamless way the author immerses you into the story – playing on some emotional issues with relation to the fight against terrorism, human rights and the issue of “how far is too far” it is an intelligently drawn novel that makes you think about those issues whilst at the same time being absolutely entertained and enthralled. The scenes on board the endangered flight are realistically scary, the mystery element is terrifically well written so you are never quite sure what is what and there is absolutely no promise of a happy ending so you barely get a chance to draw breath.

As I said earlier I loved Eden as a character – I am hoping that her story will continue – I also enjoyed the interpersonal relationships of the main protagonists from the series, the pragmatic look at work versus family and all in all it really was a very very good read with some tightly drawn characters and a very stimulating storyline.

Highly Recommended especially for fans of Scandinavian Fiction.

Happy Reading Folks!

4th in the Fredrika Bergman series
By audrey frances
This is the 4th book in the Fredrika Bergman series. Bergman is a civilian who has worked with the Stockholm Police Department. In the first book she is treated as an outsider by her team, but as the books progress they come to value her talents, but after the dramatic events of the third book, the team has split up and she is working at the Justice Department. It is not necessary to have read the other three books to enjoy this one, but you will probably enjoy it more if you've done so.

As the book opens we find out that a jet with 400 passengers, heading from Stockholm to New York City, has been hijacked as a mysterious person makes almost impossible demands of two governments. When the jet's fuel runs out, time is up. These events bring together old friends and colleagues as Fredrika liaisons with the police.

I like this series and thought this book furthered the personal stories of the characters, with a little more exposition given to policeman Alex, which was nice. Nobody seems very happy though. Even Fredrika, who seems to have everything she ever wanted, worries often about what her life has become, expressing dissatisfaction with many things. Often the narrative devotes a scene to life's minutiae, such as a couple discussing what to have for dinner, rather than any true tension to the story. The perpetrator is not identified until the end of the book, as is other information that could have been used to build tension. Some events are never explained, though they're brought up often. Sometimes obvious clues are not followed up, though at the end you find out they were important.

I thought the story was not as interesting as earlier books in the series, though I still enjoyed it, and I thought the characters were not as enjoyable -- except Eden Lundell, the Secret Service's counter terrorism head, who is a hoot.

Books in the Fredrika Bergman series are: Unwanted, Silenced, The Disappeared, Hostage.

The Hostage was an amazing story that kept me reading. I read it in 2 days. I started one evening - stayed up late. then finally gave into sleep and finished it the next day.
It brings Fredrika and Alex Recht back together. They both work together in a case where a plane has been hijacked - they work with Sapo.
we get caught up with what has been going on in their lives - and how they have drifted apart - yet still stayed in touch. The hijacking of the airplane brings them back together using their unique skills and approach that helps in understanding the situatiion.
Who hijacked the plane> Why? Are certain things connected?
Alex has a very personal connection to the flight - and in wanting it to be resolved safely... but can he he do it? I really don;t want to say more because I would give the exciting story away
