Ron White's memory book review

This book by Ron White will do as the title says...Improve Your Memory.... I read Josh Foer book on the Memory Championships and it motivated me to find out more about the mechanics of improving one's memory. I researched some other champions (Tony Buzan, Scott Hagwood and Ed Cooke) before finding Ron White's memory training information. His orderly simplistic presentation allows you to experience improvement immediately. Since using his training I am remembering list of items and trivial information long after I have no need to retain it. This book has shown me how versatile these methods can be. I have recommended it to others and if you want to keep your mind active, remember names and faces, vocabulary, numbers longer than a telephone number or anything that you may use an external memory device, i.e. notepad, this book is for you. I rate it 5 full stars.

I always thought I had a poor memory - turns out I don't!

Let's get the errors out of the way - yes they exist, numerous typos. If you choose to focus on that and miss the point of the book then you just wasted your own money because the information is terrific. (Maybe when they fix the typos the price will shoot up to $22.99, I'm happy with the $2.99!). Good, now we can focus on the book!

I am a 41-year-old mother of three and am hoping to return to school this fall. I was looking for a book on improving study skills to retain information because I believed my memory to be in sad shape. In two days I have learned to count in Japanese, I've learned the presidents in order backwards and fowards, a portion of the Bill of Rights and a foundation for learning and retaining that will be invaluable. They really should teach this in school from an early age. I've been reading it with my daughter and am downloading a copy for my son, who is also heading off to college.

I bought three books on memory (Your Memory - Kenneth Higbee, Remember, Remember - Ed Cooke and this one). The Higbee book covers a lot of background on memory and how the brain functions and may eventually teach me how to improve my own memory, but it's been a slow read. I have taken a small stab at the Ed Cooke book, but again it has been slow to warm up. This book dives right in with exercises and quick understanding to produce immediate results. I appreciated how the author used certain lists that appeared to not make sense, only to have them turn into valuable lessons further along in the book.

My memory has been getting worse and worse as time goes on and I seem to struggle daily with some things, its almost like I have an amnesia sometimes so with interest I read this book from Ron White and had great fun doing so.
Its written in an interesting way that it never gets boring and just keeps associating things that truly have been a godsend for me.

I have tried some of the memory association 'tricks' on my friends and they were amazed at the 'magic', but of course as Mr White explains its not magic but just a way to access the information that's already there in our brains neatly filed away.

Really enjoyed this book and have already recommended to a fair few people, you certainly won't forget it!

Dawson was writing in a period between the two great wars of the twentieth century, a time when some thought that the idea of progress had finally been discredited by the carnage and barbarism of the First World War. Progress and Religion was clearly intended to challenge the doctrine of progress, the rather na�ve but persistent belief that 'in every day and in every way the world grows better and better.'

Dawson argued that Western civilization was at a turning point and confronted with two real choices: reappropriate a vital Christian culture or move increasingly toward more dangerous and alienated expressions of consumerism and totalitarianism. Christopher Dawson (1889-1970) was one the premier Roman Catholic thinkers of this century. Dawson's central concern was the relationship between religion and culture. Dawson drew on an extensive knowledge of history, philosophy, sociology and theology to illuminate this connection from the beginnings of history to the modern age.
Although some of his books remain in print, Catholic University of America Press is printing new editions of his most important works. This edition of Progress & Religion contains a forward by Dawson's daughter Christina (1922-2001) and an introduction by the well-known sociologist Mary Douglas.
Progress & Religion, which came out in 1929, is perhaps Dawson's most important work. Dawson argues that at the center of any great civilization is its religion, and this religion animates and gives it a sense of purpose. This is particularly the case with Christianity. "[T]he victory of the Church in the 4th century was not, as so many modern critics would have us believe, the natural culmination of the religious evolution of the ancient world. It was, on the contrary, a violent interruption of that process which forced European civilization out of its own orbit . . . ." [p. 126.] The Western Church vivified society by breaking with oriental spiritualism and showing that "human intelligence . . . finds its natural activity in the sphere of the sensible and particular." [p. 137.]
It would make an interesting study to compare the work of Dawson with that of Robert Nisbet. Like Nisbet, Dawson was learned in the area of sociology and drew upon an extensive knowledge of sociologists such as Le Play, Comte and Durkheim. They both saw Rousseau as one the chief villains. As Dawson said, Rousseau effected a "new Reformation" and was the ideological godfather of the French Revolution. They both wrote extensively on the idea of progress. However, whereas Nisbet was "pious skeptic" (according to Prof. Gottfried), Dawson was a believer and his work contains a greater sense of urgency. Indeed, some of his writings between the wars were quite prophetic.

In his overarching masterpiece, Dawson proves himself once again one of the most brilliant scholars of the twentieth century. The profound relation between religion and culture, the essential and forming influence of Christianity on Western civilization, and the secular crisis of the modern age is demonstrated impecably by Dawson here. As one professor has said, one can measure one's liberal arts education by how much one understands of this book.

David Van Reybrouck is a pioneering advocate of participatory democracy. He founded the G1000 Citizens' Summit, and his work has led to trials in participatory democracy throughout the Netherlands. The most important book i have read in the last many years, must before i'is announced today with a picture of Donald Trump. As much as I know the book was not translated to english in many years. I read it in french and I know there is a translation in danish. I would be happy to see it translated in dozens of languages. I wonder if the picture of Donald Trump is a positive thing but...??? you never know

About the Author
PAUL KRUGMAN Recipient of the 2008 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics, is Professor of Economics at Princeton University, USA, where he regularly teaches the Principles course. He received his BA from Yale and his PhD from MIT. Prior to his current position, he taught at Yale, Stanford, and MIT. He also spent a year on staff of the Council of Economics Advisors in 1982-1983. His research is mainly in the area of international trade, where he is one of the founders of the 'new trade theory,' which focuses on increasing returns and imperfect competition. He also works in international finance, with a concentration in currency crises. In 1991, Krugman received the American Economic Association's John Bates Clark medal. In addition to his teaching and academic research, Krugman writes extensively for nontechnical audiences and he is a regular op-ed columnist for the New York Times. ROBIN WELLS was a lecturer and researcher in economics at Princeton University, USA, where she taught undergraduate courses. She received her BA from the University of Chicago and her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley; she then did her postdoctoral work at MIT. She has taught at the University of Michigan, the University of Southampton (UK), Stanford and MIT. Her teaching and research focus is on the theory of organizations and incentives.

One of the better text books I've ever used

This is really a great text book that walks through some incredibly intuitive examples. I've always thought economics is a fairly intuitive subject when taught correctly, and this book essentially makes it that you could learn microeconomics on your own. The complexity builds as the chapters go on, but you really get a grounding in the basics that makes it much easier as the chapters go along. Do the exercises along the way and you'll be golden. I'm not the biggest Krugman fan in the world, but this is the best economics text book I've ever used.

About the Author

George Lakoff is the country’s leading expert on the framing of political discourse and one of the world’s most renowned linguists and cognitive scientists. He is the author of numerous books on politics–including Don’t Think of an Elephant!, The Political Mind, Moral Politics, Thinking Points, The Little Blue Book (with Elisabeth Wehling), and Whose Freedom?–as well as numerous books on language and the mind.
 
Lakoff has consulted with the leaders of hundreds of advocacy groups on framing issues, lectured to large audiences across the country, run dozens of workshops for activists, spoken regularly on radio talk shows and TV shows, addressed the policy retreats and the caucuses for both the Senate and the House Democrats, consulted with progressive pollsters and advertising agencies, and been interviewed at length in the public media, and he continues to do extensive research on the framing of public discourse.

Currently Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science and Linguistics at the University of California at Berkeley, Lakoff is a founder of the fields of cognitive science and cognitive linguistics, has previously taught at Harvard and the University of Michigan, and was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford. For more than two decades, he was codirector of the Neural Theory of Language Project at the International Computer Science Institute at Berkeley. He also spent more than a decade as senior fellow at the Rockridge Institute, a nonpartisan think tank, and has served on the international advisory board of Prime Minister Zapatero of Spain, on the science board of the Santa Fe Institute, as president of the International Cognitive Linguistics Association, and on the governing board of the Cognitive Science Society. He has lectured at major universities in dozens of countries around the world. His current technical research is on the theory of how the neural circuitry of the brain gives rise to thought and language.

A Good Book That Could Have Been Great

This is a good book that could have been great. It features a strong opening section in which Lakoff explicates on his basic concept of frames and how they relate to the brain's structure and functioning. Keeping a laser focus on that concept would have yielded a shorter book but one that's better than this one. Unfortunately, after a terrific start, Lakoff spends the final third of the book mostly riffing about policy issues themselves, rather than about how to frame them effectively. At this point, the book reads like an audition for gig as a pundit at the Washington Post instead of a primer on communicating effectively. And there's an awful lot of filler. (You can tell an author's padding when he unnecessarily resorts to lists. Lakoff has lots and lots of them, none helpful.)

If you're interested in the field of political communication, this book is a must-read in spite of its shortcomings. But for me it was difficult to not think of the book that it shoulda, coulda, woulda been with much more focus and a few more real world examples.

A book to help you understand those who differ from you poliically

About half way through reading, but this is a keeper. We have constant discussions about "why can't the other side see the truth" and "why don't they hear facts and believe them". This book explains it all. I'm hoping that the end will give examples of how to respond to specific questions/topics. This topic is one no one knows or talks about but it is present in everyday political and religious conversations.
If someone asked for one reason why they should read, I guess my reply would be that you need to understand that your brain cannot understand a topic unless it has been previously introduced - we do this with 'frames' and this book will explain why people of different political beliefs differ so much

Terrific! updated, and right on.....an excellent and extremely useful book for anyone who wants to communicate clearly.
Especially helpful if dealing with people who have a different perspective, but excellent across the board for communicating effectively with any adult.
