BEST book for laying the foundation

Even though I disagree with a few points Downs makes in this book, I still recommend this book to ALL of my friends multiple times a week. So far, the best book I've bought off of Amazon to date.
Two more things...
This book is also written in a way which can be applied to more than just biblical matters. Some of the concepts taught are also applicable in the office! Want insight as to why some people just aren't mature enough to handle complex problems? BUY THE BOOK!
Lastly, this NEEDS to go to KINDLE! (or nook, or w/e soft copy ebook preferred)

My husband had cataract surgery years ago, so I know how cataracts affect your health and how the surgery affects your eyes, as well as your health. The Optometrist,told me I have mild cataracts in both eye. This book is very informative! I did know about some of the vitamins, minerals and herbs that could help your eyes, but Dr. Swartwout goes into great detail about what supplements compliment each other and what doesn't. This is one of the most comprehensive books I have ever read on Cataracts. You could spend a year reading other books and not get the clear and concise information this book delivers. Dr. Swartwout is not only an accomplished Optometrist but a Naturopath who understands how healing the entire person, heals the eye. This is an opportunity/window into healing you wont get from other books or authors. Highly recommended. Best deal on Amazon!

A lot of chemicals

I was really hoping for more natural solutions from this book, and more emphasis on healthy and whole nutrition. I was astounded at the list of supplements one needs to consume. It even seemed at one point that one might be swallowing up to 40 or more pills per day. I was also surprised at the total omission of vitamin K2, without which calcium cannot be properly absorbed nor directed internally. Vitamin D and magnesium are also an integral part of this system, but given scant play in the book. I suspect that the clinic in Hawaii is a cash cow. I was pleased that electricity was mentioned, but disappointed that this alternative subject was not developed. Nor was earthing or grounding mentioned.

Gently inspiring

I took this lovely book out of its package only a few minutes ago and first was intrigued by how the cover felt. It's soft. The photos inside are a muted palette of inspirational shots with closeups of stitches and weaves, light and shadow. Kantha and boro are discussed, along with contributions from various artists in the slow stitch field. I'm rushing to write this review because the book has made me (quietly) excited to explore my own handwork, but also because I have to go work at a quilt show today.

This is a pleasantly inspiring book, accessible but not academically in-depth--and that's not a complaint. I have many more academically directed books in my textile library so this is a refreshing book to have on hand. A nice primer for those who are exploring hand work as well as those who already enjoy it.

Excellent Book!

Lovely, wonder filled book. I am a long time reader of the blog this writer has maintained over a period of years. The blog was very good but this book is better than I could have hoped for. Claire has a unique way of touching the world through the art of stitch. Her words make us stop and think about our impact on the world and how we could make that better. The illustrations in this book are tactile and evocative - they make me want to put little stitches on every garment I own. The world needs more of Claire and her ideas and less of mass produced stuff. If you are trying to express yourself through stitch and dye then this book may inspire you to great things (possibly great small things). Hopefully this talented author will write more and leave a stitch trail for the rest of us to follow.

This is an art book discussing philosophy with a little 'how to' for dyeing with plants and over-dying commercial, recycled fabric, very old linen fabric, lace and thread, as well as new floss & threads in a very simple process. (Basically fill a canning jar with X and water, insert Y's plant's roots and leaves, then add small fabric, thread, floss, etc and set in sunny window with the top on for z's days or weeks.) Anyone who is very committed to acid-free, exacting, and archival processes may be disappointed.
However, this book is fantastic, gorgeous, and put together beautifully as almost all of Batsford's books. It has given me some starting places to think through several questions rolling around in my head about what has been pulling me away from the sewing machine and toward handwork in my art. It has great photos of current fiber installations, plus close ups of beautiful handwork with collaged pieces incorporating old textiles with new. What I found the most fascinating is all the different incredible textures one can make by repeating the same stitches in different densities over an area of layered, old soft fabrics that have been already sewn, used and loved-possibly for a few generations.
And that's just the first 1/2 of the book, as I've not finished yet. I can slam through bedtime kindle novels embarrassingly fast. But this book not only encourages slow thoughtful stitching, but of slow thoughtful reading and thinking as well. It would be a shame to skim the images and ooh and ahh and then relegate it to a bookcase somewhere. I've not had another hour since pulling the book out of the box to sit in a comfortable chair with good lighting and a cup of tea/coffee/wine and finish the book.
There is also some discussion about the new do it yourself and handmade sale website boom philosophies. It makes me wonder if we defeat the process by being caught producing 10 pieces of widgets as fast as possible to get out to 7 different customers ASAP. This is one of my favorite books bought in a while.

Love This Book

I love this book. First I want to say that my review is unbiased and completely my own. I have the same last name as the author but we are not related. This book is written in the style of a daily devotional. Each day is short and to the point. Each day starts with what I call a lesson on peace. Each lesson uses scripture accurately and gives you an understanding of the spiritual warfare set up to attack our peace and joy and gives you the tools to defeat those attacks. I love how practical it is. My favorite parts are the Daily activation scriptures and the daily declaration. It also equips you with effective prayers using Gods word. I actually write some of them down to repeat and pray while I am at work and I have posted some of them around so that I remember. I have gone back and looked at each scripture in context and have found that all of it is very accurate. For those of you with busy schedules like myself you will find this book very handy. Each day seriously only takes about 10 minutes of your time.
The first day after receiving the book I actually read the whole thing in one night just to get an idea of what it was like. Every day I have put into practice the teaching and the scriptures and I can already see a difference. I believe in the power of the Spoken word of God. I have been using the daily activation and declarations and I can really feel a difference. This past month alone I have gone through many difficult things and I can feel the peace of God more and more each day just by using the practical steps in this book. I am a Skills coach in an elementary school and I work with the students who have severe to mild behavior problems. I have been declaring the scriptures and principals from this book in my classroom and with my students. I can tell you that it has greatly changed the atmosphere in my school. . I am seeing less meltdowns with my students on the autism spectrum. My students are saying that my room feels peaceful. I have had several people come to me with problems and have told me they can feel peace coming off of me. God's peace will completely change how you go through the storms of life. God's peace helps you keep your joy in the midst of trouble. This book awakened me to a deeper level of God's peace and showed me that His peace really is a critical key to living the Kingdom life and drawing others into a relationship with Him.It is also greatly changing how I react to the circumstances around me. When I react in God's peace then frustration, anger etc. do not have any power and I am able to hold onto my joy. I highly recommend this book. It is one of my favorite daily devotionals. I have already ordered the companion journal so that I can begin to keep track of my journey. This is one that I can go through over and over and continue to grown. I pray that everyone who reads this book will find Gods peace in their storms and that His peace will flow over into every area of their lives.

I love this book

I love this book! It's making a lasting difference in my life. I'm experiencing much more peace in my day to day. I'll face something that threatens my peace and then I remember something Kathi wrote and I'm back on track. I'm so thankful. It's not a book you go through one time....I'm on my second go through and I plan on making it a part of my day for a very long time. The declarations are powerful and I find myself going over them time and time again. I'm so glad I purchased this book!!!

Richard C. Reynolds, M.D., is Courtesy Professor of Medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine. He was formerly Executive Vice President of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. A graduate of Rutgers University and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he did postgraduate training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. A book to take you away to another world and another time

My sister ordered this book for me and it came yesterday. I read it in one night. That's how good it was. I could not put it down. I loved it. I've now read several of these and this one is the very best, hands down. It is sensual and alluring. I could feel the desert wind in my face, could feel the emotions and sexual tension Elizabeth Bennet felt. Oh my gosh, the way his robes moved when he walked. Please my beating heart be still!

If you are looking sexual allurement without the details, get this book and read it. Oh, and there is no rape in it. Other than that, it follows The Sheik very closely, but still has a lot of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. This author did an amazing job blending the two.

Must Read!!!

Whatever doubts you may have about whether to read this book, put them aside. You will not be able to put it down.

I am a rabid Jane Austen fan, and Pride and Prejudice is, to my mind, the best book ever written. There is something about Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy that bores into the soul and won't let go. I can never get enough of them. That being said, it was a long time before I was able to read any of the sequels, adaptations, variations, or modernizations of Austen's masterpiece without having fits of pique over what I saw as blasphemous renderings of her story and characters. I was, to put it simply, a strict purist.

But eventually I realized that if I wanted to take any pleasure in these books, I had to judge them on their own merit. Jane Austen is dead. She will not be rendering her own variations. Once I accepted this, I found that I enjoyed many of the novels based on my favorite characters. My initial favorites were the variations that took Austen's characters and regency setting in various directions.

Later, I decided to give the modernizations a chance, and much to my surprise, I found many of them to be excellent.

When I first saw this title, I will admit that I avoided I for som time. Lizzy in the desert? Falling for an Arab sheik? The setting didn't appeal to me, nor did the potential cultural differences or the idea of Lizzy falling for anyone other than Mr. Darcy. I just couldn't
wrap my mind around the concept. But finally, I gave in and bought the book; my only regret is that I waited so long to read it.

Once I picked up this novel, I didn't put it down until I had finished it. The story is fascinating and very well written, the characters appealing, and the chemistry between the hero an heroine absolutely dynamic. Do yourself a favor: pick this book up immediately and enjoy the ride.

Lavinia Angell's The Sheik of Araby is a retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice on the background of the Arabic culture which is presented in a captivating style of writing. Just by use of short descriptions and well-chosen adjectives she evokes pictures of an exotic atmosphere in the reader's mind - a world that is full of coulours, smells and talks in a foreign language, a world Elizabeth Bennet wants to explore and experience by traveling with her uncle Gardiner's caravan across the desert. I recommend to read a story that - for the average fanfiction reader - might seem strange. They will soon come to recognize the Sheik for a Darcy who is depicted as proud and possessive as it is expected from an Arabic male but who is also characterized as caring and generous. The clash of cultures supports a plot that very soon into the story takes twists and turns from canon. It takes Elisabeth on a journey that leads her not only to a better understanding of the foreign culture but, more importantly, to overcome her aversions against the extremely handsome and, at the same time, enigmatic Sheik Ahmed whom she, more and more,finds it difficult to resist. Read how the Sheik has to overcome obstacles presented from outside and how he has to conquer demons of his own that lead him to believe that he is cursed to never experience love or to be loved.

Secrets of Palo revealed.

This book is not a huge text, but has some serious Palo rituals in it. I loved using the ingredients laid out to consecrate elekes and spirit waters. this book contains some serious Palo rituals that are very effective when used correctly. I have a few Palo books but this will be one of my favorite and will be used as a reference book. the info contained here are usually only known by initiates of the Palo Mayombe cult following, these are closely guarded secrets.
