The Last Place You Thought To Look
There is a story my teacher liked to tell about a consummate diamond thief who sought to steal only the most exquisite of gems. This thief would hang around the diamond district to see who was purchasing a gem, so that later he could pick their pocket.
One day he saw a well-known diamond merchant purchase the jewel he had been waiting for all his life. It was the most beautiful, the most pristine, the purest of diamonds. He was very excited, and so he followed the diamond merchant as he boarded the train, getting into the same compartment. He spent a three-day journey trying to pick the merchant's pocket and obtain the diamoond. When the end of the journey came and he hadn't found the gem, he was very frustrated. He was an accomplished thief, and although he had emplyed all his skills, he still was not able to steal this rare and precious jewel.
When the diamond merchant got off the train, the pickpocket followed him once again. Finally, he just couldn't stand it any more, and he walked up to the merchant and said, "Sir, I am a renowned diamond thief. I saw you purchase that beautiful diamond, so I followed you onto the train. Though I used all the skills of my art, which have been perfected over many years, I was not able to find the gem. I must know your secret. Tell me, please, how did you hide it from me?
The diamond merchant replied, "Well, I saw you watching me in the diamond district, and I suspected you were a pickpocket. So I hid the diamond where I thought you would be least likely to look for it - in your own pocket!" He then reached into the thief's pocket and pulled out the diamond.
The treasure that I invite you to receive, that I will continually be pointing to throughout this book, is in your pocket right now, the pocket of your heart. The heart that I speak of is even closer to you than your emotional heart. It is the heart that is the core of your being. Ant step to go somewhere to find it it implies that it is not already right here where you are. Simply see the radiant bounty of your true nature, accept that bounty, and then you will share that bounty quite naturally.

Five stars with NO hesitation
By San Francisco guy
After over 40 years of spiritual seeking, I find myself drawn, if not exclusively, mostly to non-dualists. What separates Gangaji from the rest of the pack, in my opinion, is her compassion for the human condition.
What I get from most other non-dualistic teachers is a distancing. I know that, at the core, these other teachers are probably full of love. But, for me, it doesn't always come out. What comes out (FOR ME) is distance. Parsons, for example. If he is asked if we should meditate, the questioner is likely to get something like: "Who is meditating? There is no connection between meditating and liberation. If it happens, it happens. Nothing you do in the physical brings liberation. There is no reason to do anything, in fact." All ultimately true, of course. Furthermore, that answer is totally appropriate for a small group of people that Tony appeals to, and my hunch is that he couldn't care less if he ever gets a large following. So it works. It's fine. (So the next question is usually: "if nothing in the physical has any connection to liberation, why I should pay you money and go to your meetings?" But... he can explain that, too.)
What Gangaji gives (again, to me. It's all pretty personal.) is love AND a beautiful teaching that I totally vibe to. Ask Parsons about the ego and (IMHO) you will get a lecture. Ask Gangaji, and she might talk about how it began, understandably, as the infant had to discern between good milk and poisonous milk. How it grew. The symptoms and problems it brings up. All with love and understanding. Yes, it can be argued that all such discussion is couched in dualistic terms, and that such teachings can suck us further into the world. (Hey... words are dualistic.) But it is VERY useful to me. Her bottom line teaching is that all is one, and that's where I want to go.
One thing, though. Timing is everything. I probably picked this book up at the perfect time for me. I have a hunch that 20 years ago, I would have started reading her and not gotten through 100 pages. A year ago, I would have probably thought her to be very good. A year from now, who knows? (Right this minute, I put Diamond on my top one or two all time favorites.)
Another aside: if you like this book, and are aurally inclined, buy the CD's. Her voice is up there with Tolle on the "soothing" scale.

Highly recommend.

I have a large collection of spiritual books. This is easily in my top 3. The other two books I really like is Eckhart Tolle's Power of Now and the Tao Te Ching. Gangaji hits home with this book though. This is not for the casual reader or just someone looking to dabble in spirituality. This will change everything for you so only pick it up when you've reached that spiritual ripeness. You'll know when you've reached.

Who Am I?
By Joyce
The American spiritual teacher known as Gangaji, in the tradition of the Indian sage Ramana Maharshi (her teacher's teacher), invites us to inquire deeply into the question, "Who am I?" This book is a compilation from conversations with the author at public meetings and retreats over the past fifteen years. It is personal and readable, written in short chapters each of which holds enough depth for one day. I read a chapter each morning and found it quite satisfying. I might sum up what this teacher does by saying she assists you in giving yourself fully to this moment, and you thereby discover the truth of who you are. Of course, in so doing we must unwind all the things that we do to avoid giving ourselves to this moment. Gangaji is skillful at that unwinding.
