The unabridged diaries in this volume, carefully transcribed from original documents held at the U.K. National Archives and published for the first time on lulu.com, tell the story of Ernest Satow's subsequent years in Japan (and two home leaves in Europe) up until the start of 1883. This fully annotated book includes an introduction by former U.K. Ambassador to Japan Sir Hugh Cortazzi, six black & white illustrations, a map, a select bibliogaphy, a chronology and an index. Sir Ernest Satow's A Diplomat in Japan is a very well known
and brilliant account of Japan in the years before the Meiji
Restoration. Young Ernest Satow (1843-1929) arrived in Japan
aged 19 as a student interpreter in 1862 and went home on
leave for the first time in 1869.
This book continues the story of Satow in Japan and on leave
twice in Britain and Europe in the period from 1870 to 1883.
It is his annotated and indexed diaries for the period, and
reveals more about the Satsuma Rebellion (1877) and other
domestic matters. There is much about travels in the interior
also, and a visit to Korea, as well as two extended visits to
Europe on leave.
This is the first time these diaries have been published.
The originals are in the National Archives of the United
Kingdom and this publication is with permission.
