Both the characters and their world come to life, and Goodkind's ambitious juxtaposition of modern ambiguities and the classical fantasy setting works more often than not. Although a fairly self-contained story, the book has something of the flavor of the first volume of a saga; neither Goodkind nor his publisher will receive too many complaints if a sequel is in the works. I have loved these books over the years

I have loved these books over the years. The story line does kind of taper off for a bit in the later books, but Goodkind finishes strong in the end. I recommend picking this book up and start this fantastic series, you won't be disappointed.

I've read this book at least three times, and it easily qualifies as one of my favorite stories of all time. I did notice a couple of tiny transcription errors in the Kindle version, but nothing terribly egregious.

About the Author

Jerrold H. Zar received his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Northern Illinois University in 1962. He later earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biology and zoology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Zar then returned to Northern Illinois University for 34 years to serve in a variety of capacities. He joined the faculty at NIU as an Assistant Professor in 1968 and quickly rose through the ranks of associate and full professor to become Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences in 1978. He served two terms as Chair of the Department and then, became the Vice Provost�for Graduate Studies and Research�and Dean of the Graduate School.� He�was a founder�of the Illinois Minority Graduate Incentive Program and the Illinois Consortium for Educational Opportunities Program, where he helped create and protect fellowship opportunities for minority graduate students at universities across the state. Zar is a member of 17 professional scientific societies, including being an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His many research publications cover a range of topics, from statistical analysis to physiological adaptations of animals to their environment.

Zar's Biostatistical Analysis remains one of the best

I have used Biostatistical analysis (2nd ed., 1984) as a constant reference in reports for clients in my consulting work. Not only for biostatistical applications but from everything from basic statistics to data mining apps. Since private consultants have to pay from their own pockets for books, I used it for 18 years until I recently thought 1984 sounds a bit ancient! I then invested in the new, 2010, 5th edition. I am not disappointed. It is a beautiful book with dependable methods, great explanations of some difficult topics. The footnotes are delightful as they contain wonderful historical information about the history of the subject, the people who were (and are) responsible for its development and much more. One of the main features is two chapters on circular statistics. This is where the data deal, for example, with wind directions. As is so well explained by Zar, this deals with data that do not have a true zero value. Who is to say that North should be taken as 0�? And 220� is not necessarily "larger" than 20�. So, if the USUAL average (or confidence interv als, etc.) is computed, the analyst may end with egg on his/her face (e.g. the average of 1� and 359� is 0� and NOT 180�!). I am not aware of any book at this level that covers this topic. The author deliberately chose to avoid recommending specific software but I am disappointed that it is not mentioned, for example where the chi-square test is discussed, that there is specific software that can compute the exact p-values for the chi-square test when the asymptotic conditions are not met. I also think that the author must think of removing most of the almost 200 pages of tables and replace that with some basics of data mining. Data are now so prolific, also in biosciences, that I think such an addition would be very useful. Biostatistical Analysis (5th Edition)

Excellent Book

Supplier: Prompt and received well ahead of schedule!

Book: This is a classic. Some stated that it was high level, but I didn't see it that way. He provides great examples with good details on the exact calculations. One should be able to perform all calculations with any usual calculator or spreadsheet. He does not delve into any derivations or higher level math such as derivatives and integrals. In fact, the entire book is very practical.

This book covers from Biostatistics approach which means that there is more dealing with the nonparametric side and more dealing with metrics for species, diseases, etc. not usually found in statistical texts. He covers that same areas as the usual texts, but adds better examples, detail calculations and includes good interpretations. The emphasis was more on "use" rather than subtle statistical basics for the methods.

One of the great features was inclusion of Circular Statistics, which to date his is the only one I've come across that actually provides great coverage of this area. This is not covered in any texts that I've owned, except the original works by Mardia. And the examples are very good in how to use and applications. This area is surprisingly encountered more often than not and is always overlooked. I would buy this book just for that section alone. In fact this approach solves a lot of those periodic, seasonal variation problems I ran across in industry.

Overall, he covers the usual stats, adds a lot of features (similarity, diversity, various indices, etc.), covers "random", added chapters on circular, added "intraclass correlation" which is also overlooked, and still covers the basic stats that all need to know. It's more like a "handbook" with great examples, and does not approach from a Math-Stat-Must Derive Foundation from Theorems. Sometimes all we want to do is solve the problem, understand the assumptions included in the method, and not dwell on deriving and interpreting or deriving from some high level, fundamental theorem. I've always hated "theorem-speak" where they provide 2 theorems, 5 corollaries, and then hand you a practical problem to solve (where the derivation of the connection between theory and application was "left to the student!" -- my major was not math; but in sciences sometimes you just need to use the methods correctly and do not need to carry all the deriviations. I think that when I see the methods in a rep. text, I found that I can usually trust the integrity of the authors. Past that point, I just need to apply the methods and not make mistakes.)

I started with 2nd ed, bought the 3rd and 4th. I don't see that the 5th offered much more than the 4th. And the price of the 4th (because the 5th is out there) is reasonable. This is one of the standard texts I keep in my library; I will be getting rid of some of those standard texts.

Excellent high-school level statistics text requiring only a basic background in Algebra-2/pre-Calculus

The text is a bit dry, formulaic and encyclopedic - but thorough in what it covers with good examples and tables. It also requires minimal background in science and mathematics. I have used it as a reference to bone up on statistical inference and some of the basic methodology used in clinical trials, medicine and genetics.

Like: The price was just a couple of bucks - well worth it for a reference and much cheaper than the ink and paper used in an ink jet. Good for us old-timers who prefer written texts over ebooks.
Dislike: I personally prefer more sophisticated treatments that are more suitable for physics, physical sciences and engineering. I would not recommend purchasing the newest edition for which the cost increases by 100x.
It is well-suited for all levels of education and fields requiring only high-school algebra II/pre-calculus, and non-mathematically intensive areas, specifically in biology, health-science, nursing and/or medicine. It is also of value for business, economics, and as an aid for data analysis in general. It may be of some value as background material for information/communication theory, statistical mechanics/optics,etc.

About the Author
Victor helps organizations design products and build businesses that offer the best possible consumer experience. He does this by combining his liberal arts education and technology industry work into a perspective that is both practical and human. Victor began his career in IT on the help desk, where he daily witnessed poor design and helped customers overcome it. Progressing to system administrator, he learned how networks, servers, and websites actually work by building them. Transitioning to become an interface designer, he worked for a decade contributing to more than 40 software and Internet products for organizations such as General Electric, Cisco, J.P. Morgan, and the Southern Poverty Law Center. He's coached teams at Reed Elsevier and Rodale through the entire product development process, and helped turn around a failing media business at Fox Mobile Group through the development of a new web platform and mobile apps. He's passionate about learning and sharing what he learns: He earned a master's degree in music technology from New York University and a bachelor's degree in journalism from Rutgers University, co-founded the Information Architecture Institute and the Overlap conference, and taught at the Parsons School of Design and the Pratt Institute. He's also written a book, Why We Fail: Real Stories and Practical Lessons from Experience Design Failures. A logically written book that will aid all product designers,project managers, product managers, general managers, and marketers in their quest to create useful and profitable product offerings.The book offers valuable lessons learned through failure and the common sense solutions to succeed. The summaries at the end of each chapter, the real life failure stories, and the excellently detailed approach to the subject matter made this book an enjoyable and interesting read.

Great review of the nature of failure and how even great companies and great people have and will continue to fail. One of the more important realization that are discussed is that everything really is about the experience. That is what the customer is looking for.

How to Fail Better

There are way too many platitudes about failure these days. Embracing failure is a pop-y truism, but feels like counter-intuitive nonsense to many. The best voices in that chorus want us to risk bold things and know that though failures await us, that they should not deter us, should not prevent us from being ambitious.

But failure can also be paralyzing and devastating. To paraphrase Frank Herbert: Failure is the mind killer. And for creative people and entrepreneurs, a mind is a terrible thing to see wasted by crushing failure.

So it is a very, very, good thing that Victor Lombardi has written such a smart, generous and accessible book about what we can learn from failure and how.

The humble premise of Lombardi's book is that failure is unavoidable. His hopeful conclusion is that it never needs to be fatal.

A great deal of Victor's book concerns the emergence of practices and methodology that help to include considerations of customer and user experience into the design process rather than in the forensic analysis of product and market failure. All this, and in-depth examples in chapters that take less than 30 minutes to read. There is amazing and deeply empathetic economy at work here.

The work in this fine book belongs to the new literature on improving entrepreneurial outcomes that includes Alex Osterwalder (Business Model Generation: A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers), Steve Blank (The Startup Owner's Manual: The Step-By-Step Guide for Building a Great Company), Eric Ries (The Lean Startup: How Today's Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses) and the Lean start-up movement. Not that either examples or the lessons are limited to start-up entrepreneurship. To the contrary, there is much for corporate product and service innovators here as well.

FOLGER Shakespeare Library Edition of the Tragedy of King Lear BETTER THAN EXPECTED!

I have reviewed several current editions of King Lear and other Shakespearean plays, and was somewhat disappointed in the Folger edition of King Richard III. Nevertheless, the Folger Shakespeare Library edition of King Lear appears to be both accessible and scholarly, with solid reasoning behind its balance of the First Quarto with the First Folio versions of this intense and telling tragedy which we do well to revisit now.

My first love will always be Prof. Tucker Brook's redaction in the The Tragedy Of King Lear (The Yale Shakespeare) which against the academic preferences of the time chose the First Quarto over the First Folio. The reasons given by the Late Prof. are compelling, and brought about a generation of conflated editions which combined the two versions. The Quarto came first in publication, of course, and is longer; the Folio is later and does not contain several lines present in the Quarto (I believe about three hundred) yet introduces several (perhaps one hundred) of its own.

And so we have a generation of productions which sought to combine the two. For instance we have an early recording of Paul Scofield as the King using a conflated edition and a later recording from his eighties in which only the Folio is used: King Lear (Naxos AudioBooks), following as it states the The Tragedy of King Lear (The New Cambridge Shakespeare), a strictly First Folio presentation. The greatest available recording is of course the Branagh - Gielgud production King Lear (BBC Radio Presents) which must be purchased and repeatedly heard, as it is real. Be certain to get the accompanying brochure.

Be that as it may, with this brief description of the history of this tortured text, let me state this present edition from Folger presents solid reasons for its always arbitrary choices. While stating their preference for the First Folio edition, they actually publish here a conflated version, with variant readings in a variety of brackets and poiinted parentheses, with explanations. They have produced therefore something here of great value, yet at a small price and therefore accessible to any classroom, production company or reader.

As usual the Folger diverges from the usual Critical Edition format of a third of a page of text, a strip of variorum and a third of a page of notes to the text above. Folger correctly fids more readable a diptych approach. In opening the book to the play, the reader discovers on the right hand page the text and on the left hand page notes. Further specific notes are discovered in the back.

In short (if it is not too late to write that) this book may approach any other critical edition, and passes many (let us not mention the unfortunate Joe Pearce's attempt). It presents a thorough examination of Shakespeare's life and theatre, suggestions on reading "his" language, and on reading Lear, this great tragedy for our times. A critical essay by Susan Snyder is included in the back, as well as suggestions for further readings. I find this edition in brief very useful for any new scholar of Lear, and I only wish I could now afford the new King Lear: New Critical Essays (Shakespeare Criticism), or even Critical Essays on Shakespeare's King Lear (Critical Essays on British Literature), and the rest.

Sir Alec Guiness's BBC radio recording of King Lear may be adequate for those familiar with this great play for our day

If you have already carefully read the play, and seen various presentations, this ancient BBC radio recording may prove an adequate and refreshing version. There are jarring interludes of Stravinsky-inspired music which may now seem anachronistic or otherwise out of place, rather than tragically atmospheric, but you may find as well redeeming qualities within this recording.

For one we do not find the monotone reedy Guiness voice familiar from his films, but a broad spectrumed and robust rendition of the mighty (and tragic) character of Lear. I find nevertheless the voicings of the Fool unfortunately most often nearly indistinguishable from the young gentlemen, and the voicings of the royal women barely distinguishable one from the other, even Cordelia. Although this may seem a prerequisite for any radio presentation in which only aural cues are possible, anyone reading along, for instance in the venerable and traditional and reliable King Lear (Arden Shakespeare) edition, or intimately familiar with this ancient fable may be able to distinguish well who speaks when. Otherwise it can grow incomprehensibly, dismayingly, even discouragingly confusing.

Thus you may find here an adequate aural presentation of this play. You may also wish to hear the great Paul Scofield as King Lear (Naxos AudioBooks). Audio recordings by Gielgud, etc. are also available, but this serves as a good place to start and not too greatly eviscerated, even if our eyes are plucked out and we must hear only, nosing our way to Dover. Certainly an excellent tragedy to revisit as we find a mad old man approaching the throne and a woman in the waiting.

When I was a kid we had Illustrated Classics on the Comics page.

Even the Bible.

This is not that old pompous and dull and really dumb Illustrated Classics

This is King Lear, integrally, and real.

The death of Cordelia is as effective here as anywhere else. Is it Will or is it Ian.

Or both?

Read this book. It is not a waste. Do not look down upon it in your pretensions. It is like great theatre in your hand. Do not be embarrassed. Do not be ashamed. This book gets it across, and carries as much of the text as you will find anywhere else outside of King Lear (Arden Shakespeare) or The Oxford Shakespeare: The History of King Lear (The Oxford Shakespeare), and it brings it with a driving force, a living power, straight to the heart and the mind.

So the characters appear to be caricatures, with Edmund especially a rather Karloff Frankenstein demeanor, but with the eloquence as originally written by Shelley. Will wrote them rather as caricatures, yet compelling. Read this book. It will be a great comfort, a revelation, a great friend. And greatly informative for our own curious times.

The introduction itself is brilliant and worth the small price of admission. You find herein all that is within Lear, and more. A brilliant supplement to your essential King Lear (Norton Critical Editions) and The Tragedy of King Lear (The New Cambridge Shakespeare) in any case! Hide it within those tomes in class; bring it alone to bed afterwards! Learn here Lear.
