Here, in what is bound to be one of the most controversial and talked about books of the decade, Ashraf Pahlavi, twin sister of the Shah of Iran, tells the extraordinary story of her life and of her country. For the first time she records her views -- based on personal experiences and inside information as only she could know them -- of the events which surrounded the removal of the Shah, the take-over by the Khomeini regime, and the international furor which resulted from her brother's treatment at New York Hospital.

Partly self serving

The princess' devotion to her brother, the king, is admirable but there is a lot in her life that people want to know that can not be found in this book. I do not believe any of the outlandish accusations leveled at her by her enemies, but I still believe her morals have been less than stellar.

Faces in a mirror
By Norma Wade
Having read several books on the islamic revolution, i tried to keep a balaned view of the information, but found this book to be an "they're lying, I didn't do what they are accusing me of and neither did my brother". I think this book was written too soon after the revolution. I do agree with her that the shah was betrayed by people he thought were friends, namely America.

Faces in a Mirror: Memoirs from Exile ...
By Mossy
I read this book years ago and always remembered it. Lately I decided to try to find it and Amazon had it! It is a strange and sad story about the life of Ashraf Pahavia and how differently she was treated from her twin brother the Shah. They both went from a living the life of royalty, luxury and great wealth to exile. It was a hard book to put down. Excellent read!

Heart of Darkness: Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, by David Burke

From the nature of the material itself and the history of American folk music which foretold it, to the legacy and influence on later generations of musicians, an exploration of the classic 20th centuryalbum that sees its 30th anniversary in 2012In January 1982, Bruce Springsteen recorded a set of demos in his New Jersey bedroom—afollow up to The River, the double album issued in 1980 which had reached the top of the Billboard charts. Expectations were grand, and these demo recordings promised an impressive album. However, after a series of sessions withthe E Street Band spent working on the material, Springsteenfelt these new recordings failed to capture the intimacy of the home demos andmade the incredible decision to eschew the expensive, state of the art productions, and releasethe crude, home recorded version of the album. Almost30 years later, Nebraska is considered a classic, not only among Springsteen's canon but among the entire body of work recorded during the 20th century. The album captured the public's imagination, reached #3 on the Billboard, and added a new, darker side to Springsteen's public persona. Springsteen's fanbase is awash with rumors thatan anniversary editionofNebraskawill include the elusive studio recordings and tracks not included on the original album—to which the author has had access and has discussed here.

Good book with a bad problem
By satkinsn
Though not at Dylan proportions (yet), there's a growing cottage industry of books that analyze Bruce Springsteen. This is one of them, focused on the album 'Nebraska,' but with a fair amount of what Springsteen did after as well.

It's a decent read; the author does a good job of connecting Springsteen to folk tradition, tells the story of the album well, and expands on it with a chapter about a bootleg that revealed Springsteen's early efforts at 'Nebraska.' He also has strong quotes from musicians on the lasting influence of the album. (The quotes alone are worth the price of admission.)

But he briefly, tragically goes off the rails when talking about 9/11. It's wrong-headed enough to make me question the rest of his judgment.

It's worth quoting the passage at length:

"The world changed on 9/11. At least that's what the international media told us so it must be true, right? Wrong. What changed on 9/11 was that those who would not be enslaved by America's omnipresent brand of capitalism, by its cultural homogenisation of the planet, struck back. What changed was that indiscriminate killing on a scale unprecedented outside military engagement between nations came to America. What changed was that an American President under suspicion for stealing the election the previous December, exploited the suffering of thousands of grieving families to seize the moral high ground and wage a phoney war on a fundamentalist Islamist terrorist group that probably doesn't even exist."

For the record, I think the rationale for the war in Iraq was invented by the Bush administration, and that the war was a grevious mistake. There is ample documentation on the record that President Bush wanted to topple Saddam Hussein as early as January 2001, months before 9/11.

So the above passage has just enough truth in its tone - which makes the incorrect parts all the worse.

It's simply wrong to describe al-Qaeda as "those who would not be enslaved by America's omnipresent brand of capitalism, by its cultural homogenisation of the planet..." and who "struck back." al-Qaeda's roots have been exhaustively documented in books like 'The Looming Tower' and any remotely sane reading of the record shows the group rejected western values in general (of which the U.S. was an example) and modernity in its entirety. To portray 9/11 as a reaction to American capitalism is to do violence to the facts.

The other line that jumps out at me is "...wage a phoney war on a fundamentalist Islamist terrorist group that probably doesn't even exist." The more I read that, the less sure I am of what the author intends, but if he's suggesting the U.S. invented an Islamist terrorist group as part of the war in Iraq, he's wrong. The Bush administration tried to tie Hussein to al-Qaeda, tried to blur the lines to the point where Americans believed (and still do) that Iraq was involved in 9/11, but I have read, seen and heard nothing that the U.S. invented a terrorist group.

And if he's claiming al-Qaeda "doesn't even exist," then he's simply out of touch with reality. al-Qaeda's history, personnel, means, methods, relations are extraordinarily well-documented, and much of the documentation comes from journalists and experts who are highly critical of U.S. conduct over the last decade.

Seriously, this is a decent consideration of Springsteen - but the author should not have waded into the waters he did.

Fantastic book!

This a great book--especially if you are a big Boss fan. It had good insights into the songs that he wrote--and his lyrics really portray what a stark oasis in the landscape and the life of the persons who live in this psychological landscape, as well.

Rich Territory
By Michael L. Connor
Mr.Burke is a born writer. His book, Heart of Darkness, is a pleasure.
The only criticism I have is his taking to task the Boss 's manager ? Jon Landau, for prohibiting access to Mr. Springsteen . Any unknown writer would suffer the same consequence. Mr . Burke shouldn't take it so personally.
But as it stands he comes across a little thin-skinned and - dare I say - egocentric. Along the way he gets distracted by his hurt feelings and loses his focus - which ought to be the art and craft of the Boss and one his all - time great accomplishments , Nebraska .

Good device book for both process and design engineers
By murakami@crl.hitachi.co.jp
This book explains well about several MOSFET models for SPICE simulations with informative historical review. MOSFET model parameters is now essential for semiconductor chip design as a communication tool between process/device engineers and circuit designers. In this book, starting from compact description of MOSFET physics, several well-known models are described seperately. So beginners can read only what they need. In addition, reading throughout introduction and final comments of each chapters give us information on progress of MOSFET models. If possible, I want to have an additional chapter which compares several models from the viewpoints of physical modeling and robustness of circuit simulation. Anyway, I recommend this book both to process and design engineers as well as modeling engineers for effective development of future semiconductor chips.

Crystallography and Crystal Defects, by Anthony A. Kelly, Kevin M. Knowles

Extensively revised and updated, this new edition of a classic text presents a unified approach to crystallography and to the defects found within crystals. The book combines the classical and exact description of symmetry of a perfect crystal with the possible geometries of the major defects-dislocations, stacking faults, point defects, twins, interfaces and the effects of martensitic transformations. A number of important concepts and exciting new topics have been introduced in this second edition, including piezoelectricity, liquid crystals, nanocrystalline concepts, incommensurate materials and the structure of foamed and amorphous solids. The coverage of quasicrystalline materials has been extended, and the data tables, appendices and references have been fully updated.

Reinforcing its unrivalled position as the core text for teaching crystallography and crystal defects, each chapter includes problem sets with brief numerical solutions at the end of the book. Detailed worked solutions, supplementary lecture material and computer programs for crystallographic calculations are provided online (http://booksupport.wiley.com).

Not the best book out there. The book fails miserably especially on the chapters dealing with crystallographic point groups. Overall this book is for mat sci students who already know their stuff

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Welcome to the Universe is a personal guided tour of the cosmos by three of today's leading astrophysicists. Inspired by the enormously popular introductory astronomy course that Neil deGrasse Tyson, Michael A. Strauss, and J. Richard Gott taught together at Princeton, this book covers it all--from planets, stars, and galaxies to black holes, wormholes, and time travel.

Describing the latest discoveries in astrophysics, the informative and entertaining narrative propels you from our home solar system to the outermost frontiers of space. How do stars live and die? Why did Pluto lose its planetary status? What are the prospects of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe? How did the universe begin? Why is it expanding and why is its expansion accelerating? Is our universe alone or part of an infinite multiverse? Answering these and many other questions, the authors open your eyes to the wonders of the cosmos, sharing their knowledge of how the universe works.

Breathtaking in scope and stunningly illustrated throughout, Welcome to the Universe is for those who hunger for insights into our evolving universe that only world-class astrophysicists can provide.

Crash Course on Astrophysics for the masses
By Lucien Desar
This is essentially a quick primer on astrophysics, written in a clear and easy to understand manner without dumbing down the contents. It reminds me of what I had learned in high school and college but my understanding after reading this book is a lot better because the examples were so much better. I wish the three authors taught my science courses!

The book covers fun topics including black holes, warp drives, solar systems, galaxies, multiverses, superstring theory, M-theory, unique star types, space colonization, and time travel along with equations with basic algebra concepts explained throughout.

Astrophysics for the uninitiated ... not to be missed.
By Chris
This is an extremely well done book. The authors are to be particularly commended for excellent coordination between topics, referencing each other across chapters. Given the breadth of the topics, the effort to insure integration and coherence is notable.

Starting with "astronomy 101", recounting history and discoveries to provide understanding of 'how we got to the present', the book moves from the solar system outward ... finally to the cosmology of the universe. At the start concepts are elemental, imparting knowledge many with interest in astronomy learned in early years. As the story grows more complicated, astronomy becomes astrophysics with authors incorporating necessary physics background. There are extensive discussions on aspects of galactic structure, star types, stellar evolution. Later, in the book there are select chapters on special relativity, general relativity, black holes, time travel. It is a seemingly whirlwind tour, but one well designed and described. The authors have taken great pains (and succeeded) in helping us understand what they have learned about the universe and associated complex physics.

As a grade school child, I became fascinated with astronomy, encouraged by a Cal Tech aeronautical engineer neighbor who was similarly attracted. Not having joined the astrophysics family, reading this book rekindled the old interest. On a higher level anyone pondering the core existential questions lacks adequate knowledge without a grasp of the nature of our universe. This is a good volume from which to find that knowledge. Bravo!

A Great Book for "Universal" Perspective
By Amazon Customer
This is one the most fascinating and enjoyable books I have read. For someone like me who is an astronomy and physics novice, but yet captivated by the cosmos, this book is more than I could have hoped for in terms of combining fun reading with education. DeGrasse Tyson and the other authors do a great job of explaining complex concepts with understandable terms and examples, while also providing enough of the science and math foundation and principles to challenge and allow the reader to exercise his or her brain. It is written for the truly curious, not for the passive. It is a book to fully contemplate each chapter, not to rush. It also provides plenty of fun and almost incomprehensible quick facts with which readers can amaze their family and friends. With all of the recent strange events going on in the world, this book is fun and smart escapism, with fascinating real facts but also yet to be explained phenomena, certain to keep things for us here on Earth in "universal" perspective.

Indecent Theology, by Marcella Althaus-Reid

Indecent Theology brings liberation theology up to date by introducing the radical critical approaches of gender, postcolonial, and queer theory. Grounded in actual examples from Latin America, Marcella Althaus-Reid's highly provocative, but immaculately researched book reworks three distinct areas of theology - sexual, political and systematic. It exposes the connections between theology, sexuality and politics, whilst initiating a dramatic sexual rereading of systematic theology.
Groundbreaking, intriguing and scholarly, Indecent Theology broadens the debate on sexuality and theology as never before.

A Heavy hitter for theologians not faint of heart
By M. Cross
After classes in Queer Theory and Queer Leadership and Sexual Ethics and living out and bold as an African American Transgendered woman I found myself thoroughly immersed in Marcella Althaus-Reid's book, Indecent Theology, Theological pervasion in sex, gender and politics. As I grappled with the reading I was reminded of the lectures of my professor and the joy that he exudes in his presentation. Like my professor, Marcella's book called me to a provocative joy of learning and the opportunity to delve deep into the once indecent and sacred act of theology.
On the first page is written the following: by examining the dialectics of decency and indecency and exploring a theology of stories from the margins this book brings together for the first time Liberation Theology, Queer Theory, Post Marxism and Post-Colonial in an explosive mixture. Although the book is dense and somewhat cumbersome she nevertheless engages, blends and mixes the theologies and theories of the margins; it is a theological work of an imagination that is intense, sexual and tasty, a meal that feeds the soul.
Marcella begins by addressing the collapse of the Grand Narrative of Latin America and the sexual mutilation that occurred and the yearning to throw off colonialism. As an illustration she uses the imagery of women who sell lemons without any undergarments which represent the throwing off of the colonial oppressor and their system of economic injustice and rediscovering and embracing the historical, authentic Grand Narrative of the indigenous people.
She then queers and liberates the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ and God from any thought of traditional colonial interpretations and iconic symbology, reframing them in the context of Post Colonial positions of sex thus revealing a hermeneutics of the absurd as it relates to the colonial theological regime. The book is a thought provoking critique of Colonialism and the engagement of the Latin American cultures such as the Mayan and the Spanish conquest creatively using sexual imagery. Her utilization of sexual imagery asks the question of sex before the Spanish conquest and the beloved Church and the unwanted, abusive marriage that ensued.
Throughout the book Marcella engages issues of economics, anthropology, religion and sexual desire which make the book that more interesting and intriguing. But by the time I had gotten to the end of the book I was exhausted with theology as indecent from a theological viewpoint. So while I did enjoy the book I feel that she could have made her point without an over abundance of sexual imagery.
The reading was somewhat dense, cumbersome and not as fluid as other books I have read such as Judith Butler's Gender Trouble (Routledge, 1990), provocative and engaging yet cumbersome. I find Indecent Theology, Theological pervasion in sex, gender and politics to be an engaging, high calorie meal of reading that left me full but also left me wanting more.

Groundbreaking, exciting, cutting edge
By Elizabeth
This book is not for the faint of heart. Althaus-Reid takes the reader to a theological place that few have been or been willing to go. She argues that all theology is sexual; it is just a matter if the theologian/thinker is willing to "out" or make clear the sexual nature of her or his theology -- that is to speak clearly about what underlies one's assumptions and theology -- or if, as so many Heteronormative Systematic Theologians have done, if the sexual in the theology will be cloaked in so-called decency. I found this book to integrate Latin American liberation theology, feminist theology, queer theology, and other theologies of the poor and oppressed in a way that rightfully makes clear that oppressions cannot be compartmentalized, but rather they are all part of one system. That is, none of us can be free, until we are all free. We cannot subordinate a queer theology of liberation to the preferential option for the economically poor in the name of strategy, or, as has been done so clearly in so much (heterosexual male) Latin American Liberation theology, we cannot set aside the concerns of poor women while we work on the "main" problem of "general" (read: male) poverty. Althaus-Reid weaves together critique and theological conjecturing in this exciting book, where "exciting" goes far past the sort of excitement we are accustomed to in theological writing. This book is readable and creative, and has amazing potential to challenge theological thinking in the church, academy, and "on the ground". My only slight concern or minor reservation about the book is that it is so sexualized and radical that it could be rendered inaccessable to those who are not yet ready to read a book that discusses f***ing God (Amazon doesn't let you write the actual word!) or a transvestite Jesus. Although this book is not the place to do it, I would wonder how such a potentially liberating and freeing theology could be made accessible to those who are not yet far along enough or at the place where they can make sense of or truly hear a theology that is so sexualized and so counter to what so many have be taught to believe is proper and decent. Overall, a great book for all Latin American, Queer, liberation, feminist, etc. theologians and students/scholars of religion, as well as folks who have always felt that something more lurks in the stories and images that the Church gives us. This book helps the reader/thinker/theologian to think about that something more that is lurking, quiet and unsaid, covered up or silenced by the regimes of decency.

The concept of social capital, or the value that can be derived from social ties created by goodwill, mutual support, shared language, common beliefs, and a sense of mutual obligation, has been applied to a number of fields, from sociology to management. It is only lately, however, that researchers in information technology and knowledge management have begun to explore the idea of social capital in relation to their fields. This collection of thirteen essays by computer scientists, sociologists, communication specialists, economists, and others presents a multidisciplinary look at this particular intersection of information technology and social science and the need to adopt a sociotechnical perspective. For the most part the contributors take a positive view of the interplay of social capital, knowledge sharing, and community building. Some essays look at specific instances, including the on-line and face-to-face relationships of a community of athletes, the building of social capital among Iranian NGOs, and the Internet-based communities created by the open-source movement, while others discuss more general ideas of civic and personal communities. The last four essays examine computer applications that augment social capital, including topic- and member-centered communications spaces such as the Expert Finder and the Loops system and virtual repositories of knowledge such as the Answer Garden and Pearls of Wisdom.

Social Capital Goes Online
By Barry Wellman
Marleen Huysman and Volker Wulf have edited a nice book. I think it's the 1st book that links social capital and ICT in the foreground, altho many of us have also done stuff linking the 2 notions.

Among the authors/articles are a good intro/review piece by the editors; Anita Blanchard on dispersed virtual communities and F2F social capital; Rob Cross and Steve Borgatti on informaiton flows in corporations; Charles Steinfeld on the (lack of) use of e-commerce in geographically defined business clusters; Mark Ackerman & Christine Halversman on new CSCW directions for social capital. And Anabel Quan-Haase and myself summarizing our research on how the internet may affect social capital in communities online and offline.
