About the Author

Kevin Avruch is professor of anthropology at George Mason University and faculty member of the university’s Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution. His recent books include two co-edited volumes, Conflict Resolution: Cross-Cultural Perspectives and Critical Essays on Israeli Society. He was a senior fellow at the United States Institute of Peace in 1996–97.

Professor Avruch openly acknowledges what the conflict resolution field, among many other social science fields, overlooked for many years: culture. He offers to the average reader an opportunity to consider basic principles in how culture dictates how we all interact. Culture is what people experience on a daily basis and most definitely take for granted. Armed with a new and encompassing understanding, professionals and those who are simply curious may then consider their interactions and situations from different points of views, and hopefully be willing to exchange ideas and experiences more freely and purposefully.

Professor Kevin Avruch has written a thought provoking and very useful book on the relationship between conflict resolution and culture.

The author outlines how different cultures act and think when it comes to conflict and conflict resolution. For those of us who work in an International organisation, this book is extremely handy, especially for managers. By understanding how conflicts arise and the various approaches differing cultures use to resolve conflict; the reader appreciates the variety in the world's peoples.

He gives an insight into cultural roles in resolution, cultural aspects in negotiation and the issue of power in cultural aspects to conflict resolution.

The book is especially useful for the person living and working abroad and who travels. Reading the book gives important insight into how various cultures see conflict and their various approaches to conflict resolution. I would commend the book to anyone who works in a multi-cultural work environment.Well done, Professor Avruch!

About the Author
Dr. Toga is a Professor of Neurology at the UCLA School of Medicine. He is also Director of the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging, which he founded and developed into one of the largest research neuroimaging centers in the world, and Co-Director of the UCLA Brain Mapping Division. With his diverse team, Dr. Toga has been responsible for a number of breakthroughs in various areas of neuroscience. He has published more than 170 papers, including chapters, textbooks, and reviews, and has received numerous honors and awards in computer science, graphics, and neuroscience. Dr. Toga holds the chairmanship of numerous committees within UCLA, NIH, and a variety of international task forces and is the founder and Co-Editor-in-Chief of NeuroImage, also published by Academic Press.

The setting is not a battlefield but a place revered by both the Union and the Confederacy, Mount Vernon. Just before the war breaks out, narrator Sarah Tracy, an 18-year-old from Troy, New York, accepts a position as caretaker at Mount Vernon. The determined, if inexperienced, Sarah faces a series of threats to the house, to Washington's tomb, and to her own reputation and security. From her encounters with neighbors and soldiers and from the curiously anticlimactic scene in which the Mount Vernon slaves are freed, Sarah learns that issues and attitudes are not always simple or predictable. The book highlights the many societal restrictions on eighteenth-century women as it introduces a sympathetic heroine who looks for ways around them. An epilogue, an author's note, and a bibliography are appended. A quiet but involving piece that Rinaldi's many fans will enjoy. Carolyn Phelan

Vivid slice of well-known American history.

This historical novel, set during the tumultuous times of the Civil War, profiles the work of Sarah Tracy, a young woman who is determined to lead an independent life. Sarah is tired of her family's constant supervision and their reminders that it's time for her to find a suitable husband. So she lies to her family and potential employer in order to secure a position as caretaker of Mount Vernon, George Washington's former home.
Sarah's struggle to keep Mount Vernon's grounds neutral, practically sitting on the border of the North and South and within miles of bloody conflicts, brings her into contact with famous figures from the Civil War, including Abraham Lincoln. She must decide how to handle the African-American servants working at Mount Vernon, whose status is unclear. She also has to work closely with Upton Herbert, a gracious Southern gentleman who becomes very important to her.
Ann Rinaldi, a historical re-enactor herself, certainly knows how to make the past interesting. Her main characters are three-dimensional and relatable; teens will be able to sympathize with Sarah and understand why she is so annoyed with her family. It's a shame though that the Epilogue feels the need to defend Rinaldi's artistic license. Most people should understand that a historical novel might embellish a story to make it interesting to the modern reader.
The author explains in the Epilogue that she invented the storyline of Sarah's friend Mary and their argument over Upton Herbert. Stories in which women argue over a man are disappointing and should almost always be avoided. Luckily, though, this story has enough going for it to overcome that problem. The Epilogue does refer to Sarah and Upton's future, answering questions that readers will no doubt want answered.
Ann Rinaldi once again brings to vivid life a slice of little-known American history in a way that will have readers wanting to learn more about Mount Vernon and Sarah's history.

A nice, quiet read

Rinaldi has the most wonderful gift: she can take the tiniest, unknown aspect of history and make it as a brilliant as a star.

True to her talent, she once again chooses a lesser known event in history and gives it depth and dimension.

If you're looking for a highly devoloped romance, this isn't it. If you're looking for bloody action scenes from the Civil War... this isn't it. Instead, "Sarah's Ground" offers the point of view of a young woman and her struggle to remain neutral during the escalation of violence between the Union and Confederacy. She makes it her duty to protect Mount Vernon, where George Washington made his home decades before.

This book is a quiet, relaxing read in which you can easily whittle away the afternoon.

It'll hold your interest only because the main characters were real.

"Sarah's Ground" is a very mature book author Ann Rinaldi wrote. I found it interesting that she chose to employ the use of a diary method, yet kept the use of chapters and didn't use dates for each entry - just a double space between each one. The story was a bit slow moving, and I would have enjoyed reading more about the refurbishing of the house. I had no idea that Mount Vernon was neutral ground during the Civil War, much less that there was a Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. What further astonished me was that there really a Sarah Tracy and Upton Herbert, and I was blown away to find out in Rinaldi's author's note that they were real people. If only for that reason read this book. I "sorta" recommend

EXCELLENT EXTRODINARY BOOK!

this is a excellent book Holly is the biggest gossip queen known to Shadyside she always seems to know whats going on and what is going to happen but some one has had anough and will go so far to make sure she does not spread any more secrets or gossip even if it means murder. i thought this was a great book i read it in 2 hours all of his books are excellent and page turners i am reading the series i think you should read this book and see what you think.

What Holly Heard was the first Fear Street book I had ever read. It has all a horror story needs horror, gore, suspense, and mystery. The characters are great. The Killer is a total shocker.

It's interesting to catch up on the latest gossip on people. Who's dating who, where's the best spot to be on a Friday night, etc. But, there is a bad side to all of this controversy. Let's take a trip on the wild side, or maybe in a book called "What Holly Heard" by R.L. Stine. Let's face it, Holly is a gossip! She knows all of the latest news on people, and is quick to tell everyone else. Her friends try to ignore her non-sense, but how can they when all of her games end up affecting the way she feels about Noah, the coolest guy in school, when she already has a boyfriend? Whatever it is, Holly wants to find out. Is all of the stuff that Holly hears going to take a turn and lead on a fantasy ride, or maybe more of a death ride? You decide. Spreading the Magic!

In another fun book by Barbara Prignano, "Anthony and the Magic Bumblebee" brings back Anthony, Joseph and their garden. Joseph waters the garden regularly, and while water helps plants to grow, the Magic Bumblebee teaches the children that pollination is required to produce more plants. With the Magic Bumblebee sprinking his magic and spreading plant pollen, new, tall, and healthy sunflowers soon begin to grow.

Cute characters and illustrations also help to introduce young readers to plant science and hopefully open their minds to the great mysteries of one of nature's most important processes.

Anthony and the Magic Bumblebee is a very enjoyable book. My daughter loves it. She has me reading it to her at story time every day which I am happy about since I enjoy it too. It's filled with lots of love and affection.

Anthony and the Magic Bumblebee is as adorable as the first book How Bunnies Got Their Cottontails.

This book is very well written and the illustrations are adorable.

Looking forward to the next one!

This cute story about a small bumblebee that uses his magic dust for pollination teaches children the basics of how growing plants and flowers need more than just water. It's also a nice story about contributing to the family, and appreciating grandparents!! No wonder this book has won a couple of awards.

Zut alors? Oui.

Compared to the illustrated, voluminous Larousse, this holds it's ground quite well. It's easy to use, nice print, not too big, sturdy paperback (meaning it won't turn to mush or assorted pages if it gets knocked around your book bag for a couple of semesters) and it's versatile enough to be used by beginners but complete enough to be used by experts. Case in point: I only took two semesters of French, so I'm still at a beginner's level, but I've been able to use this without any difficulties; but my best friend has taken French for over 7 years now, and she found it incredibly useful, and started asking me to carry it around whenever she was doing any research for her thesis at home or at the coffee shop, just so she wouldn't have to take the aforementioned Larousse (which, although is quite possibly the best French dictionary I've seen, is so incredibly heavy and thick it's like hanging around with an Encyclopaedia volume)

All in all, for the price listed, this is a GREAT pocket dictionary.

Le Robert Micro Poche

I have been teaching the first four semesters (i.e., the beginning, intermediate & advanced levels) of French grammar for twenty-two years and Le Robert Micro Poche, has, in my opinion, out-ranked all other French-French dictionaries for the last twelve years and has become my "number-one" recommendation to
my students at all levels of second-language acquisition.

A "must-buy" for those who intend to major or minor in this language or if you will be studying French beyond the first year level. As a paperback dictionary it is unique in its explanations of "langage": besides being a word translator, Le Robert contains seven additional categories that explain phonetics, grammatical structures, conjugation schemas and more. For all that it contains, it is very user-friendly and does not easily fall apart like many paperback dictionaries.

It is so good that I would say that Le Robert Micro Proche is "priceless." But, really, for what one pays, new or used, it is the best deal for a text which acts essentially as a French Thesaurus.
