A must for any new parent. Especially those who have been shy with babies and children in the past.
By nycMARCseattle
Before I had my twin daughters, I have to admit I was not the type of guy who was naturally drawn to babies/ children and tended to avoid them. When people did make me interact with their children, I would just stare at them with a nervous half smile and say "uuhhh..... whats up?". Needless to say no baby or child were impressed with my presence. This was never an issue till my daughters arrived. I loved them so much and yet was not sure how to interact with them and what they can perceive at their ages. This book was perfect. It's filled with games in order of age (by month) so you know if its appropriate for their child. It's clearly written and has photos which explains the games better. Best of all it mentions how each game is beneficial for your child such as sensory, strength and bonding. I now have a number of games that I play with my daughters, it has made my time with them so much more precious.

Meh

Hm... Am I missing something? This book doesn't tell you anything you already know from common sense. Dangle things in front of the baby, make noises, hold them and lift them, give them stimulating toys, etc. Returning mine.

Inexperienced Mom's Idea Guide
By Troubleswingman
Okay, I'm a first time mom and only child so I have never had the experience of working with newborns and young infants for an extended period of time. Many reviews said that this book is filled with common sense actions/items, and for those who have siblings or previous experience with newborns, I can see how it would be. For me, on the other hand, it is filled with ideas on how to help my baby develop in ways that I probably would not have imagined. Sure, one or two of the moves you will already know, but many of the other ones you may not have thought of. If you plan on spending lots of time around your baby and are looking for ways to keep him/her entertained (and yourself, let's face it), then this book is for you. What's even better is that with the exception of one or two smaller objects, the vast majority of the book can be conducted without purchasing any toys. It's just you, your baby, and a prop or two you already have around the house.

Kindly Inquisitors: The New Attacks on Free Thought, by Jonathan Rauch

Tracing attacks on free speech from Plato's Republic to America's campuses and newsrooms, Jonathan Rauch provides an engaging and provocative attack on those who would limit free thought by restricting free speech. Rauch explores how the system for producing knowledge works in a liberal society, and why it has now become the object of a powerful ideological attack. Moving beyond the First Amendment, he defends the morality, rather than the legality, of an intellectual regime that relies on unfettered and often hurtful criticism. Kindly Inquisitors is a refreshing and vibrant essay, casting a provocative light on the raging debates over political correctness and multiculturalism.

"Fiercely argued. . . . What sets his study apart is his attempt to situate recent developments in a long-range historical perspective and to defend the system of free intellectual inquiry as a socially productive method of channeling prejudice."--Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

"Like no other, this book restates the core of our freedom and demonstrates how great, and disregarded, the peril to that freedom has become."--Joseph Coates, Chicago Tribune

"The philosophical defense of free speech and free thought that seems to have been forgotten. . . . A powerful argument."--Diane Ravitch, Wall Street Journal

From Publishers Weekly
In this elegant but narrow essay, Rauch ( The Outnation: A Search for the Soul of Japan ) argues forcefully against those--including fundamentalists, egalitarians and humanitarians--whose attempts to censor speech will lead, he fears, to intellectual authoritarianism. Rauch investigates the development of the culture of critical, liberal inquiry in which strong opinions are pitted against each other. He criticizes "epistemological pacifists" who "think you can keep knowledge and get rid of pain," and deftly dissects convoluted "hate speech" regulations. But Rauch, unlike some First Amendment theorists, does not suggest ways to foster a culture richer in speech and inquiry; his long-term view--"good criticism drives out bad"--may not carry much weight with those who feel censorship has a role in fighting pressing societal inequities.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
A compelling defense of free speech against its new enemies, who range from the mosques of Iran to the groves of American academe. In place of Justice Holmes's old standard of truth competing in ``the marketplace of ideas,'' Rauch (The Outnation, 1992--not reviewed; contributing editor to National Journal) substitutes a new one: that of ``liberal science.'' Formulated by skeptical epistemologists like Hume and Locke in reaction to the authoritarian regulation of knowledge advocated by Plato, liberal science sorts through the hurly-burly of conflicting claims of truth, marginalizing those that cannot pass scrutiny while accepting that even today's accepted truth may need to be revised tomorrow. But after years of nurturing the spirit of intellectual freedom and the pursuit of knowledge, this principle recently has been shaken, with the defining moment being Western governments' weak-kneed reaction to the 1989 death threat made by the Ayatollah Khomeini against Salman Rushdie. Rauch divides challengers to free speech into three camps: ``fundamentalists,'' who believe truth is obvious and not to be questioned; ``egalitarians,'' who think that the beliefs of all sincere people deserve equal respect; and ``humanitarians,'' who hold that one must never offend. But whether they are Moslems enraged at negative portrayals of Islam, creationists pressing to have their theory taught along with evolution, or minorities imposing university codes against ``hate speech,'' all these groups wish to revive the Inquisition notion that ``people who hold wrong and hurtful opinions should be punished for the good of society.'' Rauch's strength here lies in his relentless insistence that liberal science, though hurtful at times, is the best means of advancing knowledge and avoiding ``herdthink.'' Rauch, Jewish and gay, calls not just for toleration but for ``the hard self-discipline which requires us to live with offense.'' A powerful salvo in the war over political correctness--and a ringing reaffirmation of the principles of free thought as conceived by Locke, John Stuart Mill, and others. -- Copyright 1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. The best book I've read in the past 10 years
By A general reader
This is a short and profound book. I've read it four times and it gets better every time. In fact it is the only book that I have ever read four times. It has changed my views on free speech for ever.

What's the core argument in the book? Well, one cannot explain it in a short review, which is always a good sign (if one could, what would be the point of reading an entire book?). But in a nutshell, it is a defense of unlimited free speech. I say *unlimited* because while most people see value in free speech, most people would also argue that there have to be some limits (hate speech, for example, or denying the holocaust). This makes intuitive sense, and this was also my point of view - before reading this book. The book has convinced me that the power of free speech lies EXACTLY in the ability to express opposing views, no matter what they are. (This is a gross oversimplification of the book - you really have to read it).

This is not a political book - it is a philosophical book, but one that doesn't require any previous formal philosophical education. Anyone can, and I think everyone should read it.

A must-read
By A Customer
For all those who think that the demands of "creation-sciencists" merely for an equal hearing with evolutionary theorists in science class are fair and reasonable, for all those who believe that people who say offensive and hurtful things in universities and elsewhere deserve to be silenced for the common good, or for all those who are convinced that potentially destructive and divisive ideas (such as homophobia, sexism or Holocaust-denial) should be surpressed to make our society more civil and inclusive, this book is for you. For it will show you, lucidly and elegantly, why you are wrong. Our way forward is through what Rauch calls the "liberal scientific" enterprise, the greatest gift of the Enlightenment, not through demands for the excision or surpression of what many consider dangerous or offensive ideas. That, Rauch, shows is the shortcut from modern democracy to a sort of middle-age regulated despotism. The ideas are stimulating in the extreme, the writing exemplary in its clarity, passion and lucidity, and the message about as important as you can get. A must-read, especially for anyone living or working in a university environment.

Stunning, compelling, and important
By Anthony R. Stevens
This book is superb. A well-written, exhaustively researched treatise on the philosophy of "liberal science" and a look at the attacks made on that philosophy by (mostly) well-meaning advocates of inclusion, equality, and civil discourse.
I'm somewhat at a loss to try and describe how important I think this book is. I rarely comment on books I've ordered, but I feel that EVERY educated person should read this book and understand the reasons why an open, critical, unfettered exchange of ideas is of central importance to civilization and to the progress of human knowledge.
Read this book. You'll be glad you did.

From Publishers Weekly
Blau's second novel (after The Summer of Naked Swim Parties) revolves around a family in crisis after a mother's debilitating heart attack. The troubled adult children of Buzzy and Louise come home to visit their parents on their hippie ranch in Santa Barbara, Cal., "where the days are so sunny you'd swear a nuclear reactor had exploded." Sisters Anna and Portia, and brother Emery, recall the events that led them to their restless present. Emery and his partner, Alejandro, tip-toe around the topic of asking a sister to donate eggs so that they can have a child. During their week-long visit everyone must deal with uncomfortable details about their parents' personal lives, as well as the ghosts of the people they once were, wishing that they could leave their childhood wounds behind once and for all. Blau writes funny, often heartbreaking, and always relatable anecdotes. She aptly describes the family visiting Louise in the hospital: "every day, a moment comes when someone can no longer take sitting in the beeping, stinking room." Blau's lifelike characters are such a joy to get to know that one feels sorry to leave them behind.

From Booklist
The bohemian Southern California Stein family faces a crisis when its matriarch, Louise, suffers a massive heart attack. The three adult children, Anna, Portia, and Emery, return home to hold vigil and commiserate over their unusual upbringing, recalling Louise’s fondness for frequenting the nude beach; her pot habit, which inspired their father to devote his avid gardening skills to cultivating a deluxe homegrown version in their backyard; and Louise’s abdication of her parental role when she gave Emery’s care over to Portia, then age eight. All three have suffered from being raised in a chaotic environment. Anna is chronically unfaithful to her husband, eyeing every male stranger as a potential bedmate. Portia struggles to recover her self-esteem in the wake of her husband’s desertion. Emery, happily in love with his soul mate, Alejandro, has become obsessed with domesticity. Blau uses every trick in a writer’s arsenal to make readers care about this flawed, very human family. From painful humor to poignant scene-setting, she takes no prisoners in her candid look at an unconventional clan. --Joanne Wilkinson

Review
“At the end of the day, the Stein family is dysfunctional, foul-mouthed, appalling, loving and ridiculously endearing, thanks to Blau’s hilarious rendition of their group dynamic. Soundtrack? Hotel California. Woody Allen directs.” (Baltimore Sun)

“The domestic relationships . . . are brilliantly rendered, a contemporary California version of Philip Roth.” (Austin Chronicle)

“An entertaining romp through one family’s history.” (Boston Globe)

“A light-hearted, enthralling read that enables us to laugh at our own less-than-perfect families.” (Bust Magazine)

“Blau writes funny, often heartbreaking, and always relatable anecdotes ... [Her] lifelike characters are such a joy to get to know that one feels sorry to leave them behind.” (Publishers Weekly)

“From painful humor to poignant scene-setting, [Blau] takes no prisoners in her candid look at an unconventional clan.” (Booklist)

“Jessica Blau’s second novel is not only a wise and pitch-perfect depiction of family dynamics but also happens to be unrelentingly, side-splittingly funny. I dare you to forget this family.” (Irina Reyn, author of What Happened to Anna K.)

“If you think you’ve read enough novels about mixed up families already, go ahead and read one more. Jessica Anya Blau’s DRINKING CLOSER TO HOME is a phantasmagoric, hilarious carnival ride.” (Madison Smartt Bell)

“Jessica Blau’s DRINKING CLOSER TO HOME is heartfelt and hilarious as it explores every nook and cranny of this wonderful (and wild) family. If you want to know why we love our parents and siblings even as they drive us to drink and distraction, you must read this book.” (Ron Tanner, author of Kiss Me, Stranger)

“The sharpness of Jessica Blau’s voice and wit never ceases to amaze me. From the first page this surprising novel takes a classic tale--adult children going home again--and turns it on its head. An absorbing, heart-wrenching read.” (Katie Crouch, author of Men and Dogs)

“A very funny -- but also deeply humane -- novel . . . Parental love and booze and drugs and all the complications of becoming an adult: This is a smart book -- a book that makes you cringe and laugh out loud.” (Pauls Toutonghi, author of Red Weather)

“If you took Jonathan Franzen, soaked him in Southern California culture, sprinkled him with biting insight and twisted humor, you would get a book that tasted something like DRINKING CLOSER TO HOME.” (Katie Arnoldi, author of Point Dume)

“Jessica Anya Blau has created an unforgettably unique family . . . and done them a great service by placing them in a compelling story that is alternately funny and sad as hell. “[Blau has] lavished such attention on these people that I found it impossible not to care about them--and equally impossible to forget them.” (Steve Yarbrough, author of Safe from the Neighbors)

“Hilariously irreverent . . . . This unconventional joy ride of a novel is also an unexpectedly powerful and multi-layered exploration of unbreakable family bonds.” (Gina Frangello, author of Slut Lullabies)

“Chekhov knew that laughter and tears are only a breath apart. So does Jessica Anya Blau. The family in her marvelous DRINKING CLOSER TO HOME . . . make[s] beautiful, hilarious music through time and all the spaces in the heart.” (James Magruder, author of Sugarless)

“DRINKING CLOSER TO HOME is a gloriously rich portrait of three adult children who discover that the tensions and hurts they still have between them are inextricably tied to their laughter and their love.” (Susan Henderson, author of Up From the Blue)

“[H]ilarious and heartbreaking....[A] testament to the impossibility of ever truly ‘leaving home,’ and the great triumph of this book is in Blau’s skillful illumination of how that’s both a blessing and a curse....This novel will stay with you for a very long time.” (Skip Horack, author of The Southern Cross and The Eden Hunter)

“As perfectly pitched as it is comically painful, DRINKING CLOSER TO HOME echoes a profound Tolstoyan truth about family. Many novelists have a sense for place, the gifted ones deliver life with such fidelity that the truth hits very close to home indeed.” (Marisol, author of The Lady, The Chef, and The Courtesan)

“I have never encountered such exciting, eccentric, and lovably flawed characters as those Jessica Anya Blau creates in DRINKING CLOSER TO HOME.” (Allison Amend, author of Stations West)

Couldn't put it down!
By Alison's
I was at once appalled and in love with this quirky family!

Anna, Portia and Emery are summoned back home when their mother, Louise, has a massive heart attack. During Louise's time in the hospital recovering, the three children reminisce about their childhood, their odd parents, Buzzy and Louise, their even odder extended family and where the road has taken them.

"It has only been recently that Anna forgave her mother for a litany of crimes Anna had been carrying in her stomach like a knotted squid."

As soon as I started reading Drinking Closer to Home, it felt so much like a memoir, I had to look at the copyright page just to make sure that it said "fiction" at the front. At the end of the book, the author interviews her own family, on whom the characters are based. What happens in between is pure magic.

Oh, how I cringed! Oh, how I laughed! Oh, how I felt compelled to turn the pages!

The very things that might make another family miserable are the very things that make this family work. The prolific swearing, the filthy house, and the unabashed drug use made me want to read the pages with my eyes half closed while learning about this crazy family. The humor, the brutal honesty, and the love made me want to want to be a part of it.

There were several scenes in the book that made me laugh out loud. There was one part in the book where we flashback to 1976 and the kids were visiting their grandparents Otto and Billie.

"Emory was hovering nearby, hiding himself from Otto, who had publicly called him Sissy Boy at least three times in the last hour. Emery thought that if only his grandfather could see the singing and dancing extravaganza of the Corny Kids Variety Show, he'd never call Emery a sissy again."

Emery was my favorite character in the book. He was embarrassed by his family, but didn't like being on the outside of things either. His struggle with his identity both in and out of his family moved me deeply.

All of the characters in this book were, in a word, colorful!

If you enjoyed The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, you will fall head over heels backward in love drunk with Drinking Closer to Home by Jessica Anya Blau.

Love it!
By Liz
In Drinking Closer to Home, Jessica Anya Blau paints a vivid, painful, and funny portrait of three siblings and their parents. The family members are all damaged, in part due to their unconventional family life, yet they remain fiercely loyal to one another. The book is riveting - I stayed awake late into the night reading (not something I usually do) because I wanted to find out what the characters would do next. What is most amazing about the book, though, is not the recklessness of the characters' behavior or the outrageousness of the situations they find themselves in (nor is it the detailed imagery and accuracy with which Blau brings the scenes to life, though this is impressive, too); rather, it is Blau's ability to make these wild characters so compelling and so real; nothing in this novel feels inauthentic or exaggerated, but at the same time I could not have predicted or imagined any of it. This is a really great book by a really great author - I recommend it wholeheartedly!

strong quirky family drama
By A Customer
In Santa Barbara, fifty-something Louise suffers a massive heart attack. She remains in a hospital in critical condition with her prime complaint being the lack of a cigarette or two hundred. Her husband Buzzy the lawyer promised Louise he would conceal her condition from their three adult kids, but could not as he needs them near for his sake.

Anna flies in from Vermont; leaving behind a spouse she cheats on due to a sex addiction to run their florist business and their infant. Portia, separated from her cheating spouse Patrick, arrives alone since their daughter Esme lives with her father's lover. TV producer Emery and his boyfriend Alejandro also come from the East Coast; they hope to persuade his older sisters to donate their eggs so that they can raise a baby; they already have selected the chosen female bearer. The bickering horde invade Louise's room causing havoc to the hospital's rule keepers, which in turn elates Louise still a renegade hippie after all those years.

The insightful story line rotates focus from the present mostly at the hospital and the past in which each protagonist recalls incidents differently. Louise is the prime player who holds the strong quirky family drama together. Buzzy and the children have flaws that make each seen real and lead to fans empathizing with them; especially Portia who as the middle child became the mom when her older sister and their mother abdicated the role yet her daughter rejects her.

A wonderful work - a labour of love.
By Patty Taylor
My copy of this excellent book is very well-thumbed by now, and it continues to fascinate me. It begins with a pronunciation guide which I found easy to understand, although a little more explanation of the silent "l" sound would have been useful. This is followed by a description of the Apache verb complex. "Complex" is the word! - but it gradually became more understandable after I had been using the dictionary for a little while. The verb-forms of "to handle" come next; this is a crucial aspect of the language, and is simply and intelligently presented here. Prefixes, suffixes and affixes follow - again, very useful information.
The layout of the dictionary is logical and serves to illustrate the kinds of linguistic connections which the Apache make - connections which are as different as possible from the ones which English speakers make. For this reason, I suggest that some knowledge or investigation of Native American culture would be a great help to users of this dictionary. It has certainly inspired me to seek out such information.
In sum, this is a work of great scholarship, and has been compiled with real love of the Apache language. It's a treasure to own.

Living languages from the past
By Victoria Tarrani
This book was created as a way to help save the Apache language. "The primary audience for this book is the Apaches who are learning to read and write their own language." (From the Preface and Acknowledgements Western Apache-English Dictionary.)
The goal was to standardize the language so that all Apaches keep their rich heritage in today's bilingual, bicultural society. This version contains over 10,500 Apache / English word and over 4,400 dialect versions.
For me the Western Apache-English Dictionary is much more. I was born on the White Mountain Apache Reservation when the Apaches allowed peoples other than the Mountain Tribe to live there. My inability to live in the small town where I was born is reasonable -- it is due to combating simple attrition that has caused many native cultures to merge into others and disappear.
However, my heart and soul are linked to the blood of the land. When I discovered this book, which was compiled by Editor Dorothy Bray in collaboration with the White Mountain Apache Tribe, I felt as if I had found the manna in the desert.
Not only does this book contain the cross-reference between English and Apache words, it has the grammar, verb construction, changes in writing conventions, the Apache alphabet, and how to pronounce the words using the unique Apache marks.
The book format has sufficient white space to make it easy to associate the words, and to study the grammar rules. After these rules are meticulously detailed the next section is the Apache word translated to the English equivalent; the second is reversed. All of this care makes it easier to research or enhance linguistic skills.
For the Writer:
Most writers love dictionaries, reference books, and the etymology of words. Why would a writer want one more dictionary?
One answer is that we writers can "only cure" our addictions to books, words, and diverse languages by getting every book in the universe -- it is a long, constant quest. However, we do this to increase the veracity of researched details within the plot that allows readers to suspend disbelief making the story more than entertaining.
My word processor will not place the correct markings in the Apache words, but I will provide a few of the Apache words and English associations. If you intend to write a story set in Fort Apache or the surrounding area then you should purchase this book for reference. These genres include: S/F time travel, histories of the old West, historical romances, fantasies such as "A Connecticut Yankee in King Author's Court" except the hero finds he is facing Geronimo.
This section includes some of the words; please note the slashes between meanings because they indicate different dialects:
Five examples of case changes:
* iich'igo'aahi -- a teacher or he is teaching
* iich'igon'aa -- he taught
* iich'igon'aah -- you teach or you have taught * iich'igot'aah -- he will be taught
* iicg'igot'aahgo na'godi'i -- parable / story that teaches
Similar in meaning:
* kude -- here
* ku'de -- right here
* kud' -- from here
* ku'dahyu' -- up here
* kude'yogo -- if it were here
English to Apache:
* evil -- ch'lin biyi' golinthi
* do evil or witchcraft -- da'ohni' or da'oi'di'
This five star book is rich and rewarding.

Western Apache-English Dictionary
By Patricia D. Krenik
My son thanks me for sending him this book. This is what he says:

"It is really well written and has many world/phrases that are helpful. It covers the Western Apache's Dialect from the Arizona and White Mountan Areas.

It has some differences from other bands of Apaches. LIke 'nnee' --people/apache and 'indoa' white people/whiteman in the Chirichawa dialect."

He goes on to say that the book does touch on verbs and alphabet but explains that a lot of words are full sentences. That he spent so much time to write details and share what he was learning through this dictionary shows that the gift was really appreciated.

Very well done product!

Failing States, Collapsing Systems: BioPhysical Triggers of Political Violence (SpringerBriefs in Energy), by Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed

This work executes a unique transdisciplinary methodology building on the author’s previous book, A User’s Guide to the Crisis of Civilization: And How to Save it (Pluto, 2010), which was the first peer-reviewed study to establish a social science framework for the integrated analysis of crises across climate, energy, food, economic, terror and the police state. Since the 2008 financial crash, the world has witnessed an unprecedented outbreak of social unrest in every major continent. Beginning with the birth of the Occupy movement and the Arab Spring, the eruption of civil disorder continues to wreak havoc unpredictably from Greece to Ukraine, from China to Thailand, from Brazil to Turkey, and beyond. Yet while policymakers and media observers have raced to keep up with events, they have largely missed the biophysical triggers of this new age of unrest – the end of the age of cheap fossil fuels, and its multiplying consequences for the Earth’s climate, industrial food production, and economic growth. This book for the first time develops an empirically-ground theoretical model of the complex interaction between biophysical processes and geopolitical crises, demonstrated through the analysis of a wide range of detailed case studies of historic, concurrent and probable state failures in the Middle East, Northwest Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Europe and North America. Geopolitical crises across these regions, Ahmed argues, are being driven by the proliferation of climate, food and economic crises which have at their root the common denominator of a fundamental and permanent disruption in the energy basis of industrial civilization. This inevitable energy transition, which will be completed well before the close of this century, entails a paradigm shift in the organization of civilization. Yet for this shift to result in a viable new way of life will require a fundamental epistemological shift recognizing humanity’s embeddedness in the natural world. For this to be achieved, the stranglehold of conventional models achieved through the hegemony of establishment media reporting – dominated by fossil fuel interests – must be broken. While geopolitics cannot be simplistically reduced to the biophysical, this book shows that international relations today can only be understood by recognizing the extent to which the political is embedded in the biophysical. Although the book offers a rigorous scientific analysis, it is written in a clean, journalistic style to ensure readability and accessibility to a general audience. It will contain a large number of graphical illustrations concerning oil production data, population issues, the food price index, economic growth and debt, and other related issues to demonstrate the interconnections and correlations across key sectors.

Review

“If you're new to the notions of peak oil / EROEI / collapse of industrial civilization, and/or would like to try and enlighten a friend that might be receptive to these issues, I'd say that you can't go wrong by picking up a copy … of Failing States, Collapsing Systems.” (From Filmers to Farmers, fromfilmerstofarmers com, February, 2017)

“Failing States, Collapsing Systems: BioPhysical Triggers of Political Violence, a thought-provoking new book by Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed. … The book is only 94 pages (plus an extensive and valuable bibliography), but the author packs in a coherent theoretical framework as well as lucid case studies of ten countries and regions.” (Resilience, resilience.org, January, 2017)

About the Author
Dr Nafeez Ahmed is an award-winning investigative journalist, bestselling author and noted international security scholar. He is listed in the Evening Standard's 2014 and 2015 ‘Progress 1000’ selection of the most globally influential Londoners.
Ahmed is a columnist for VICE’s science and technology magazine, Motherboard, and for the London-based digital news platform Middle East Eye. He is a former environment blogger at The Guardian where he reported on the geopolitics of interconnected environmental, energy and economic crises via his Earth Insight blog. He has also written and reported for The Independent, Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Scotsman, Foreign Policy, The Atlantic, Quartz, Prospect, New Statesman, Le Monde diplomatique, Raw Story, Asia Times, among many others.Ahmed has twice won the Project Censored Award for his journalism, in 2014 for his story on the energy geopolitics behind the Ukraine crisis, and in 2013 for his article on food riots as a ‘new normal.’
Ahmed’s book, A User’s Guide to the Crisis of Civilization: And How to Save It (Pluto, 2010), was the first integrated peer-reviewed study of the intersection of climate change, energy depletion, food scarcity, economic instability, terrorism and state-militarisation. In 2010, he won the Routledge-GCP&S Essay Prize for his seminal paper presenting the social science framework for the book in the journal Global Change, Peace and Security, “The International Relations of Crisis and the Crisis of International Relations.”
Ahmed's previous books include The London Bombings: An Independent Inquiry (Duckworth, 2006); The War on Truth: 9/11, Disinformation and the Anatomy of Terrorism (Interlink, 2005); Behind the War on Terror: Western Secret Strategy and the Struggle for Iraq (New Society, 2003) and The War on Freedom: How & Why America was Attacked, September 11, 2001 (Progressive, 2002). The latter is archived in the ‘9/11 Commission Materials’ Special Collection at the US National Archives in Washington DC – it was among 99 books made available to each 9/11 Commissioner of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States to use during their investigations. He also contributed to the Coroner’s Inquest into the 7/7 London bombings, and has advised the Royal Military Academy Sandhust, British Foreign Office and US State Department, among other government agencies.
Nafeez's academic work revolves around the historical sociology and political ecology of mass violence in the context of civilizational systems, and focuses on bridging disciplinary divides across the natural and social sciences. He has taught international politics, contemporary history, empire and globalisation at the University of Sussex’s School of Global Studies and Brunel University’s Politics & History Unit. He is currently a Visiting Research Fellow at the Global Sustainability Institute of Anglia Ruskin University’s Faculty of Science and Technology.

Nations collapse after peak oil production reduces revenue made worse by drought, water scarcity, social unrest
By Alice Friedemann
This book was published by top scientific and engineering publisher Springer, and is part of the group that also owns Nature magazine, the most prestigious journal in the world (tied with Science magazine).

Ahmed’s book is about the biophysical factors that bring nations down, such as drought and water scarcity exacerbated by climate change and high population growth at a time when less and less food can be grown. The hardest hit nations are past their peak production of oil, so there is less and less revenue to buy or subsidize food and water, which leads to social unrest, which worsens all the other factors. On average, this causes nations 15 years past peak oil production to experience systemic state failure.

Ahmed points out that “because these and other factors are so nested and interconnected, even small perturbations and random occurrences in one can amplify effects on other parts of the system, sometimes in a feedback process that continues. If thresholds are reached, these tipping points can re-order the whole system”. These ecological and geological factors result in social disorder, which makes it even harder for government to do anything, such as putting more money into water and food production infrastructure, which accelerates climate change and energy decline impacts, which leads to even more violence at an accelerating rate until state failure.

The media and experts blame it on poor government, usually ignoring the real reasons because all they know is politics and economics. Perhaps this is because journalists have bought into the free-market ideology of economists, who ignore the role of energy and natural resources as the basis of our fossil-fueled civilization and see the world only through money and credit, because they can't imagine limits to growth on a finite planet, since The Market and Human Ingenuity will always come up with Something Else, regardless of the laws of physics and thermodynamics (perhaps they're so used to breaking financial laws that they don't see why the Laws of Nature can't be overcome either). Energy and natural resources are completely ignored in their fancy and fanciful equations.

For example, if you cut a forest down and sell the lumber for $500 million, you've added $500 million to the GDP. But when water treatment plants downstream have to spend $500 million more to treat the water, $500 million is ADDED to GDP, not subtracted. Nor is the cost of soil erosion on farmland that floods after the forest is cut down, sending poisonous pesticides downstream and eutrophication killing off fisheries in the Gulf, or the shortening of the productive lifespan of the topsoil on the farms from 1500 years to 300 years and the consequent cost of the lost food production for a millennia, since soil takes 500 to 1000 years to regenerate.

As it is, Saudi Arabia is expected to stop exporting oil by 2030 due to both declining oil production and increasing population (Saudi Arabia's population has grown 8-fold since 1960), and BAM! -- down goes India and China, who are well past their own peak oil production. By 2045, every nation on earth will be on the way to collapse as supply chains break and the electric grid fails (see When Trucks Stop Running: Energy and the Future of Transportation (SpringerBriefs in Energy).

Read the book to find out when collapse is coming to your nation (or see my review at energyskeptic).

In my opinion, failing Middle East states may destabilize the few exporting countries like Saudi Arabia before 2030. And that will hasten the end of the oil age, since the ME has 2/3 of the remaining oil reserves, leaving plenty of oil in the ground if social unrest, war, and/or terrorism lower oil production, or even destroy the oil infrastructure. After the ensuing dark age, it may be hard to get back to the same level of technology as before to get the remaining oil out.

Ignore and hate these truths if you like, but unlike fake news, Ahmed has hundreds of citations to back up the points he makes.
