A treasure for all families

As newlyweds we've had a hard time finding resources for developing spiritually in our roles in our couple.
We found ourselves in the same situation that inspired the author: a true desire to lead our family spiritually but not having the tools. This book gave us practical advice and sound theology for our journey. Beautifully written and very honest. Each couple interviewed offered simple yet profound advice and moving witnesses of the spirituality of marriage. Finally! A Practical Guide to Living Out Our God-given Complementarity

Husbands and wives are complementary, right? And equal in dignity.

But they're not the same.

So how can a husband and wife lead their family in the way that God intended them to? That's the central question that Warner answers in this practical book.

The title itself reveals the fundamental analogy: the husband is the head of the family, and the wife is the heart. Just as a person cannot survive without a head and a heart, a family cannot function to its ideal without the husband and wife fulfilling their custom-made roles within a family.

Warner approaches the question of how this plays out in real life by examining family life from many different angles and then interviewing faithful Catholic couples to understand how they have lived out those different facets of familial life together.

Warner augments these anecdotal insights with Scripture passages and magisterial writings from the Catechism, popes, and other authoritative sources.

I found the chapter on the need for a family mission statement to be the most powerful. We spend so much time in business coming up with our mission statement and then working to communicate that mission relentlessly to our employees, customers, and shareholders.

Yet, I had not made it a priority to come up with a mission for my own family. I read the great missions that the families she interviewed came up with, and then we made our own Rose family mission. It is a simple but important idea, and one that I wouldn't have thought much of until reading this book.

Warner's written an eminently practical book to help Catholic husbands and wives live out their vocations in their family life.

Her mother disappeared on a scientific mission and her father went to look for her. She and her younger sister are living with their aunt and coping as best they can. Then, one of the boxes sent by her mother before she disappeared turns out to have a dragon egg in it. Bryn isn't sure what it is at first, just that she doesn't want scientists to dissect it and destroy it. She ends up having to run away to where it all began in Alaska, where her mother disappeared. Can she outrun poachers, scientists, and other nefarious characters and find a safe place for the baby dragon? Fletcher has done an outstanding job of creating a believable place and space for this story to unfold. The plot flows smoothly and quickly with a lot of action. Bryn is multidimensional and realistically developed as are many of the minor characters. Room is left at the end for a sequel, but readers aren't left hanging. All in all, this is an engrossing and imaginative read that will appeal particularly to fans of Robin McKinley or Anne McCaffrey.Saleena L. An Action-Packed Read

I loved the first three books in The Dragon Chronicles, so I was prepared to sit back, relax, and savor this new entry. That didn't happen. There was no sitting back or relaxing here. I was leaning forward, heart thudding, eyes glued to the pages throughout.

Ancient, Strange, and Lovely takes place in the near future. Bryn knows that her family is different. They have a secret. They can "ken" with birds, touching their minds, bonding, and finding companionship with a particular bird. At the beginning of the story Bryn's scientist mother has gone missing in the wilds of Alaska. Her father has taken up the search and soon he is missing also.

When Bryn's bird Stella starts acting strangely and leads her to the basement where a mysteriously large egg is hatching, Bryn is not prepared to care for the unusual lizard which emerges. It isn't long before she is on the run from Oregon to Alaska in an attempt to find someone who can help to care for this critter, which she suspects is really a dragon.

I sat up reading late into the night to find out what happens to Bryn and "the critter." Readers of the the first three volumes will have extra knowledge of the distant past events which led up to this book. But, it is a stand-alone and won't need the other volumes to make sense. (Although you are going to want to go back and read them, once you reach the end of Ancient, Strange, and Lovely!)

Not Just Another Dragon Book

There are tons of dragon books out there, but only a handful are done well. The vivid world, engrossing plot, and clever details of "Ancient, Strange, and Lovely" definitely make it one of the best.

Susan Fletcher creates a futuristic version of earth that is well developed and detailed. She did a good job of putting us in the world, and giving us a sense of the main character's daily life. But she takes her detail and vividness further as she describes the baby dragon. The reader can envision its fuzzy baby-skin, its kneading claws, its body language - by the end of the book the reader is as attached to it as the main character!

The plot as well is enticing and dramatic - over and over in the book Susan Fletcher puts problems in her character's way that keep the reader asking, "What is she going to do NOW?" There is suspense around every corner, and seemingly unsolvable conflicts that somehow manage to be worked out in the end. The touch of magic ties the whole book together, making it a fun futuristic adventure that will satisfy anyone's thirst for fantasy!

This book is an exciting ride, and I would recommend it to anyone!

A believable world

Susan Fletcher did an excellent job creating a world set in the near future. Most dragon fantasies are set in either a completely fictional world, or in medieval times, so it was refreshing to read one in which the characters talk on cell phones and watch the news on TV. Yet the environment has been compromised, and Fletcher puts us into that world with details about the culture and how teens would respond to what the "older generation" did to them. Their dress, their "body art," their music - complete with outrageous band names and hit music lyrics - all add a depth and richness to the setting.

The main character is a true teen, impulsive and emotional. The description of the dragon baby almost makes you believe the author had raised one herself. The plot moves along well, and makes the book a fun read.

Like the topic it covers, this book is a treasure

If you have any passing interest in the tiki culture of the 50's and 60's this book is for you. Containing hundreds of rare photographs, matchbook covers, swizzle sticks, and more, this book stands unparalled in its field.
About the only thing missing is a chapter on the Exotica music which closely tied to this culture - the tunes of the era get only a very passing reference.
That said, YOU WILL NOT REGRET purchasing this book.

Great resource

This is a well written and illustrated book. Many of these special interest sort of books do not have a quality narritive to accompany the illustrations, this is an exception. Well written and interesting, the book tells the story of the birth of tiki cool in great photos and illustrations. Many photos of building no longer standing. The book itself has a padded cover, and would make an excellent gift or personal treasure.

This is an excellent picture book filled with great stories about the good old days. It will bring back memories of a tiki age gone. Why dont we have these kinds of places anymore? Maybe that will change soon but in the mean time this is a great book for all who love this period in our American History or for the island dreamer.

I' am absolutely spell bound by all of his wonderful Land of Story creations

I'm a 50 year old Retired Air Force women who has been a fan of Chis Colfer since his days on Glee as Kurt Hummel. I' am absolutely spell bound by all of his wonderful Land of Story creations. They are such a fresh take of our beloved fairy tells that at times I find myself laughing out loud reading them, and other times turning the pages in anticipation of what is to come next. Chris is an absolute genius the way he ties in modern day problems with the old time tales that makes it fresh and fun for all ages to enjoy. The only draw back with these stories...the next book does not come out fast enough! I can't wait for book 5 and beyond! Please keep the train rolling with the movie options for this series, because I will be there along with all of your other adoring fans!

"Someday you will be old enough to start reading Fairy Tales again"

My students and I absolutely love these books. I work with kids ranging from 2nd to 7th grade and most of them either have reading based disabilities or are simply behind in their reading. These are kids who as a whole, don't like to read, and I have been trying to find books and book series that will grab their attention and make them enjoy reading. My kids all love the Land of Stories books, and are so excited when I get a new one in the series. They are written at about a 5th grade reading level so they are above where my younger kids should be at and a little below where my older kids should be. I read them aloud with the kids and we take turns. They read until they get stuck, or struggle and then I take over for a bit. They have been great for strengthening reading skills, broadening vocabulary and sparking imagination. Chris Colfer has done a remarkable job and I would recommend this series to anyone, old or young.

Colfer Has a True Gift for Storytelling

The only other series I can remember being this excited about is the Harry Potter series. Chris Colfer jumped in full-force with “The Land of Stories” novels, and his stories have stolen my heart.

“The Land of Stories” is a world full of magic and excitement. We get to spend time with our favorite fairytale characters – but we get to know them on an entirely new level. And new characters that Colfer introduced to us instantly become our best friends. I look forward to reading and spending time with Alex and Conner – and you’ll never find a character more uniquely wonderful than Froggy.

Whenever I begin reading these books, I am instantly pulled in, and it takes every bit of strength within me to set them down. I find myself staying up reading well past the point of exhaustion merely so I don’t have to leave this magical world. Each chapter leaves me wanting more, and each story has ended with such an intense cliffhanger that my jaw literally drops every time. Now that I’ve been part of this world, I daresay I never want to leave it. It is so easy to understand how Alex and Conner feel about this world, about their adventures. Because when I read these stories I get to become part of this world and experience these adventures alongside them. And they are some of the greatest moments of my life.

Chris Colfer has a true gift for writing. We know from watching him on Glee that he can sing and dance and act, but I believe that his role on Glee was just a small part of helping him reach his greater purpose. Colfer was put on this Earth to inspire us. Through his bravery, his kindness, and his amazing ability to tell a story, he has done just that.

I will keep reading these books as long as he keeps writing them. And I highly recommend you do the same.
